Hello all. So I've noticied as of late that my Devo has some dog agro. This morning I went and got him some stuffed animals to see just how he reacts to different sized and shaped toys. First I gave him a spongebob square pants doll. He chewed. Got board. Laid down. Second I gave him a medium stffed dog with floppy ears. He barked loudly and jumped to take the doll. When I gave it to him he started shaking his head and using his paws to tear at it. I took that toy away. Next I gave him a tiny stuffed dog (a beany baby) I offered it gently just like the others and acted like I was petting it before I gave it to him. He took it gently and ran to his bed covered it up with his wrestling blanket and went to eat. He only ate a few bites then went to the bed. He stuck his head under the covers and started crying after a few minutes. So I lifted the blanket and there he was licking the beany baby. There were 4 lil pieces of his food by the doll. I think he was sad that the "puppy" didnt eat. How freekin smart is that!!! How sad as well. but I cant get another dog. No room. How do I help him? ------------------ IP: Logged |

that's so cute!! dont take any toys away though unless you want him to chew up your stuff instead. he'll go through lots of toys. just make sure that you play with him alot so he gets all of the exercise and mental stimulation that he needs. you need to let him be around other dogs so he can get socialized. My dogs will tear up their toys whether or not they are stimulated by me or not. It's a pit bull thang. Just make sure, you trade the cute stuffed toys with something more durable (if you can find anything) or they will eat and swallow. I've had a dog who actually ate a small hand-towel. Just wolfed it down whole. Puked it up whole too. THANK GOD it didn't get stuck. I have NOT found any toy they can't destroy or eat. Kongs are worthless, but do last longer. I am still experimenting on what toys are better than others. I spent over $400 on dog and puppy toys last year. This year I spent over $200 just on various toys and balls to see again, which ones are better. I have found some long lasting chew toys. Might save someone some money instead of going through what i am. lol.. One thing to remember, look for the HARD RUBBER stuff, or HARD PLASIC and anything that says for the "aggressive chewer' Even these things are not fool-proof, but they do last longer. I bought a box of 20 of those large nylabones, (different shapes) THey chew them down to nothing, but not anything that can hurt them. They last anywhere between 2 - 4 months depending on the size. Unseen, go to the post I made yesterday looking for you. I gave you some suggestions, and I will email you some files to read aswell, just post your email, or email me at leslie146@hotmail.com and I will forward them to you. Stuffed Kongs are wonderful for dogs because they are indestructible. At night I pust about 1.2 cup of my dogs kibble in the kong with a little more (not much) that a teaspoon of peanut butter to cover the hole and put it i the freezer over night. The next day, your pup will spend forever licking the frozen peanut butter and chewing the hard rubber. (This is also good for teethig puppies) IP: Logged |

Whats a kong? Ok Ill go look at the other post. I dont usually let him have stuffed animals I did it this time to see how he reacts to a "Dog" toy a "puppy" toy and just any old thing. I think it showed more that he wants a friend than he is agro. Were going to the dog park in downtown tommorow I think and well see if hes cool with the other dogs. Watch with my luck there wont be anyone there! IP: Logged |

Unseen, A kong is a dog owners dream!! It is an indestructible rubber toy for dogs with a hole in th bottom of it. These thing sare guaranteed for life. I wouldn't leave a stuffed animal with your dig. I did this once, and came home to stuffing everywhere! What a mess. Thank gosh Harley was okay, but it can get caught in their stomach if they swallow it, so be careful with the toys you leave. Thats why the kong is such a safe bet. IP: Logged |

You guy's must have smarter dogs them me LOL My dogs cant tell the difference between a stuffed toy on my 9 yr old daughters dresser from a toy brought for them. So I dont take the chance of a mix up. They also dont no the difference between an old shoe and a new one. The only thing I let them chew on is raw bone I get frome the local butcher beef knuckles, frozen split pigs feet, dried pig & Ox ears and tails, rawhide chews ext. This way theres no confusion, the thought of chewing on funiture or my daughters toys never crosses them there little dogy minds [This message has been edited by Deus (edited 03-03-2004).] IP: Logged |

I get smoked ham hocks for my dogs once a week. They don't play with toys as much as they used to, but then again, they work most of the time and are worn out. (still extremely hyper, but you can tell the diff). I use a kong. Only problem is now I can't find it, So Smokey must have burried it. Char is to dainty to get her feet "dirty". Anyhow. GOod luck. And definately socialize. Doggie classes like agility are fun to attend with them too! IP: Logged |
