Hello:

Just curious, has anyone had problems within the past 3-5 years with their dogs becoming positive and or having problems with lyme disease?

Almost three years ago, my precious dog Jasmine passed away from "glomerulonephritis"
which is kidney disease. Hers was (caused from lyme disease)
Since then, 3 of my other dogs have tested positive for lyme.
I do have shelter dogs and I don't know their background before I adopted them so I can only say that they have been on frontline since I have owned them.

I have always used Frontline on my dogs.
I have also decided this year to begin getting lyme injections for them as a prophylactic measure also.
I wish to know if anyone else has had problems with lyme?
I also am wondering if this year, I should use flea collars along with the frontline?
Lyme is a serious disease. Much more serious than I ever imagined it to be.
My dogs and myself are very active, my favorite hobbies are: hiking, mountain biking, gardening
and walking on the beaches with my dogs.

I know that my lifestyle must be part of the reason that they are testing positive for lyme but I belive that a dog should be active and have a full life and they probably would not be very happy just sitting in the house getting no exercise.
Any information on this subject would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Susan

Lyme disease come from ticks. Over here the only place the ticks are, is in the fields. I've had only one dog have A tick, and I found it on him a few days after he was running around in the field for an hour with my husband. None of my other dogs ever had ticks. The only place my dogs do run is in my backyard. Does Frontline deter ticks? I don't use Frontline. I do use "K-9 Advantix" from Bayer. It repells and kills ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. Last year is the only year I have EVER had to put anything on them in over 15 years! I think it might have been because it was SO rainy and hot. (They are outside dogs.) I seen a few fleas on just a couple dogs and almost had a spasm. So we did all the dogs. Worked like a charm.

Yeah about 5 or more years ago I had a dashound(sp?) wiener dog, and he got lymes, well about 3-4 years before that my mom got it too, which was like the first case of it around. They were on the same meds. but my dog would get used to the meds and we would have to up the dose. He would get really poor, because it really effects the muscles in the body. I had to get my mom to the vet and have him put to sleep. I didnt want him to suffer any more. he would get well for about 1-2 weeks and get sick for about a month. And the ticks that carry lyms are dear tick, that what we call'em, and the are every where around here.

I'm really surprised that we personally don't have a tick problem in our yard since we have our piece of 'fenced-in' property with the fields all around us. Yes, deer tick is correct. And being that our state has the most deer per square mile in the U.S., and a ton of deer who are our neighbors, you would think we would have a problem too. DAMN, I better not push my luck. I will keep quiet on this subject from now on. It's starting to scare me.

I don't think most tick preventives affect the tick until after it has bitten, though I could be wrong. I don't think (if that's really the case, couldn't tell you, I just vaguely remember hearing or reading that) that would help much, nor would the collars (of which many have really icky chemicals anyway and can make dogs sick themselves).

Chickee, how did you like the Advantix? We've used advantage for a long time (frontline never seemed to make a dent in the fleas on Goo, who was the only one we had at the time), and while it works on fleas, doesn't on ticks, so that's always a worry (we check everytime we come in after a run in the field or park, but still). I've heard from a few people that it's great and from others that it's crap, but living on the water and in the Mid-Atlantic, it would be great to not have to tick check, and bug spray the dogs before/after taking them out during bug season, so I'm curious how it's worked on your dogs?

Not in my animals, but my aunt got lymes disease from picking a tick off our bull. So its not only present in dogs and cats, but livestock as well. The bull posesses no symptoms of the lymes disease and has no effect, but she sure does! Its an awful disease. IF you've recently removed a tick (with your fingers) and within a month, began to have itchy spots (not necessarily red irritated skin, or whelps) and have suden bouts of dizzyness, light headed ness. Go to the DR IMEDIATELY!!!

Last year I did try K9 Advantix with good results. However, I was only able to buy it for three months out of the season.

Unforuntatly, my vet stopped carrying it for one reason or another. It seems where I live RI last year anyway K9-Advantix was not easy to obtain. (Unless on-line) I would rather use that over Frontline due to the fact that I would think it is double protection against heartworm because it targets mosquitoes also.

I also have to add a comment on Frontline.
I once thought I was saving money and ordered a $150.00 order of Frontline from 1-800-PetMeds.com.
The shipment came in on time as ordered and I began using it on my dogs and cats.
(Separate order for the cats) Within 2 weeks, I noticed that the animals had fleas and I picked a few ticks off of the dogs and cats too. (Not dear ticks wood ticks)
I called my vet and told the receptionist about the problem. She put me on hold and apparently looked up when I had purchased the product.
She came back to the phone and said "I am sorry, you have not purchased any Frontline here in the last 6 months."
I said "Yes, I know, I am trying to save money and started buying it on line from 1-800-PetMeds.com
She then gave me a speech on "Never buying that product on-line because you don't know how old it is, where it is stored i.e. temperature should be kept 50 degree's. And you don't even know if you are truly buying frontline in the first place."

Needless to say, I decided not to buy it on line again. Once I started purchasing it from a vet or Agway, I never had had the problem with it not working.

I am not sure if I just had purchased a bad batch or the receptionist at the vet was correct giving me the info that it is not good to buy this product on-line???

I found this quote on frontline's website.

"Some products only kill fleas or ticks after they've already bitten your pet. FRONTLINE doesn't wait for a flea or tick to bite your pet; it kills fleas and ticks when they come in contact with your dog or cat. FRONTLINE Plus also keeps future fleas from biting your dog or cat by killing flea eggs and larvae before they turn into adults."

I still think if I can purchase K-9 Advantix this coming year I am going to permanently switch over to it just because it works against mosquitoes as well.

I have only used it ONCE. Meaning one application which suppose to last a month. I did all 9 dogs. It worked and I haven't had the need to use it again. Another breeder recommended it to me since I had no idea what product was better, (since I never had a flea problem before). She said she KNEW it worked because a few of her dogs are allergic to flea bites and would have broke-out if they had been biten. Like I said, I still have no fleas only after that one time. I bought mine online. I buy EVERYTHING online. I have a whole list of catalogues on my site if anyone wants to call or email them their catalogues just to have handy. I got Advantix from Omaha Vaccine Co. (www.omahavaccine.com. One of many places I order. (I like to compare) They were the cheapest at the time I ordered. $59.68 for 6mns for a 21 - 55 lb dog. No vet prescription is needed.

Also it says that Advantix repells 4 different types of ticks before biting and spreading disease. Also remains effective after swimming or bathing. Stops fleas from biting within 5 minutes of application.

Try it and see. Wont hurt and it isn't as expensive as the others.

mypetherapydog, wehave ticks really bad right now and they are dear ticks and my dogs wear preventic collars. I just put brand new ones on them last weekand on Fri I found a huge gorged tick on Jake. but he was almost dead yuk! the preventic collars only kill after biting. When I first did research 4 years ago there was nothing that repelled tickes and I notice your quote from from frontlines website they now have a topical preventative. I am going to have to ask my vet about that. We also have a bad problem with heartworm so they are on sentinal. I am trying not to overmedicate my dogs but I dont think there is any choice with the critters we have around here and doing something more

I believe that Avantix is pretty new(ish) and it isn't a collar and it does say it repells before they bite, so..... I really never liked Frontline because I had a dog who acquired a cronic itch and lost all his hair. (Allergic to it.)
