We just adopted a 5-mo-old female puppy from a shelter last weekend. We did not realize her breed when we first brought her home, but our vet and others have confirmed that she is at least part pitbull. We have a 6-yr-old male rottie mix and 2 cats at home as well.

Being new to the breed, we have some concerns after reading PBRC.net and other sites. So far, so good - our puppy seems fine around our cats and has become fast friends with our other dog in just 2 days. While she is as sweet as can be for the moment, we have read that aggressive behavior can emerge in adulthood. We have even read that pitbulls have been known to turn against dogs in their own home that they were once friendly with.

Does anyone have any experiences - good or bad - that you can share with us to help us understand what we're dealing with?

where ya from? just wondering because i as well have a pit mix who's the same age and was wondering if one of her littermates got dropped in a shelter. In any case, get it some good training and socialize, socialize socialize yer new friend. Mine is a 1/2 lab/1/4pit/1/4 akita and is a phenomenal dog. Very intelligent, obedient (except for her occasional stubborness, which is the akita in her) and VERY athletic/agile. Good luck... there's many good folks on here who will be able to help you

all dogs no matter what breed can show agressiveness [more like dominance] when they get to adulthood. and all dogs can turn on anyone or anything as well. so i wouldnt worry too much over those statements! as bluetrain said, the only way to prevent it from happening is to train and socialize! a good way to do that is to find a park where ther are dogs there and go everyday. bluetrain, tell me about akita stubborness!! everytime i tell my akita to do something she looks at me like 'well, why dont YOU do it?' grrr

Hello:
I am the proud parent of two pitmixes.
One of them was a bait dog that was dumped in a local park and left for dead.
She is now almost three years old.
She is great!!!
I agree with the board on this topic.
SOCIALIZE, SOCIALIZE and MORE SOCIALIZE.
Take your dog with you everywhere, bank drive thru, fast food drive thru, bike paths, PetSmarts, Petco's etc. The more dogs, cats and people your dog is exposed to the better!!!!!!!!
Also, if you have the time and money, a dog trainer would be beneficial for you to learn how to properly train your dog!!!
Good LUCK!!!

Hi everyone and thanks for the replies.

I was wondering- do any of you know about Pit Bull bans. I'm thinking of PG County, MD specifically.

We are considering purchasing a house in this County and are concerned about what we have read regarding this law.

Thanks in advance...

I dont know about a ban, they are usually for full breeds, but some cities in the country wont let you own a mix either. if this is your first house to purchase a lot of homeowners policies have breed specific clauses. One policy I had asked me what type of dog I had, and I just renewed and the latest co did not ask what type. This is going thru some courts now as illegal and may even include your rotty mix, so just a food for thought - if you do buy and the ins ask what type of dogs, say for instance what else does your rotty have - like lab, and your new pup, say the other breed like lab mix.
Cudos to you for giving her a home and so glad to hear she gets along with your other pets.

PG County, MD has BSL, "pit bulls" are banned there. I think they're currently the only place that has it in MD, though Hagerstown (nothern MD) was tryign to pass a ban a few months ago, and there was even a statewide bid at BSL not long after that, though it's been dropped for the time being. I'd steer clear of Baltimore City, things are pretty bad up there, lots of irresponsible owners and unstable dogs, easy enough for something to happen for people to get stirred up and calling for a ban (again. They tried once a few years ago, it was voted down by ONE vote). There's also apparently a bill in the works that would prohibit BSL, but an attempt was made at passign something similar in 2001 or 2002, and never made it, so it's hard to say.

Here's a link that give a pretty good rundown of current state happenings http://www.adoa.org/legal/md.php

Another that's a bit out of date I think, but if you email them, you should be able to give you current information http://members.aol.com/euniverz/
