We've just been wrapping Haley's tail. We put neobactricin (or however it's spelled) ointment on it if it's open, then put a couple squares of guaze stuff on, then some fabric tape stuff. Haley hasn't bothered with it too much since the first couple times, though Goo pulled it off one night as Haley walked past (right after I'd put it on too, I was peeved). I'd just wrap it while someone's there to supervise and not let the dog chew or mess around with it, when they catch him even looking, tell him "no" and hand him a toy instead. Goo had a problem with her tail a while back (not happy tail though) and I had to use the above plus a strip of ductape on both top and bottom of the wrap to keep her from pulling it off (she was chewing at the sore, so we kept it covered whenever we could and only took it off when we were right there to watch and make sure she didn't chew). When it had to come off, baby oil got the ductape off without taking her fur too. The past couple days I've just been wrapping the stuff around Hale's tail, like a tube, but extending about 1/2" past the tip of her tail to protect it, but let air get to it still, and it worked ok. If they do wrap it, make sure that whatever they use, it's not too tight, and that they take the wrap off to let it breathe for at least a little while every day.

Well goob-- thank you for the info. I know that having his tail taken off would be painful for him at this age. Deisel chews at his tail, the bandages everything. The bagbalm helped a bit but it just starts to heal and then of course he beats it everywhere and it busts open again. His tail is like a whip. It leaves welts and marks on your legs. Anyhow, thank you for the advice. Angie
