hi im wondering if anyone can help. my puppy is still nipping and sometimes she gets a bit too rough. i read that u need to teach them to soft bite before u stop them biting altogether, i have been doing this but still sometimes when she gets excited she bites fairly hard, i dont mean real vicious biting but enough to hurt. is this normal for her age or should she have stopped by now as i have read she should stop nipping by 12 weeks i would greatly apriciate your advise as i can tell alot of you know your stuff thanx

I'm having the same problems out of my 2 9-week olds. The thing I have tried is telling them NO biting in a very firm voice and I give them a chew toy right away.I have found that it is working for us.Maybe it will help you also.

I love to ruff house with my dogs but I have found that when I ruff house with them I was actualy teaching them that its alrite to bite, Even though its just play time for them it can still hurt.

So I simply stopped doing that, Now when there in a piss & vinarger mood I break out one of there tug toy's or the puppy rag and we go at it. When ever they try to go for my hand or sleev ext. they get a rap on the nose and a sharp NO!

This lets then know that its not ok to mouth me or any member of the family. If you dont let them get into this habbit you dont have to break them out of it later.

Puppies need some sort of outlet and early bonding & socializing with the family is very inportent just be sure that the activity you choose is safe for both you & your pup.

Tug toys and rags are great I use a shammy with my pups, I never leave there toys out for them to play with on there owne simply because after a wile they seem to loose interest and the toy becomes just another object around the house.

So after play time is over I pick up the toy and put it away (This also makes my wife happy The next day or when ever I take out the toy again they go bannas like it was the 1st time they ever saw it or something. This gives them there much needed play time But the control is all mine. (we play when I say we play)

I could go on but its late and im sure you get the idia anyway

Hope this helps

Deus

I never had a problem with my pitbulls biting when they were babies, however i do have an english bulldog puppy that is 1 yr old now,and he still bites me.I have been to alot of obedience classes and nothing has helped, but that is very abnormal he is just kinda crazy, but i love him to pieces and continue to work with him.One thing i have learned is not to ever hit them not to yell or scream when they bite you because it makes it a big deal, and more fun for your puppy. You are supposed to remain calm and try giving them a command like sit, something they know well. You teach them to respect you by making them sit before everything, such as giving them a toy,or before you pet them,or feed them. This teaches them that nothing in life is free{very important}.This will help your dog to have more respect for you, make sure your dog knows your are the leader of the pack.Make sure they learn the sit command very well before you try to teach them this, make it fun and teach them to sit first using treats. You can also teach them when they are biting you, say bad chew, then give them a toy and say good chew when they bite that. You can also teach them easy when giving them a treat,to do this keep the treat between your fingers tight till they start to bite easy then give it to them. This may help.Another thing to do is get up and ignore your dog when they are behaving like that,or put them in a time out in there crate if they are really biting too hard,do not say anything to them you do not want them to think their crate is a bad place,so only keep them in there 2 to 3 minutes ignore them and then get them back out like nothing happened.Hopefully this will help!

WOW I could not disagree with you more!

A sharp NO! stops them in there tracks and lets the pup no that this is bad and not tolorated! THEY DONT THINK ITS FUN.

Have you ever seen a momma dog with her pups? When the pups play gets out of hand and thoughs sharp little teeth start to hurt she will give them a loud bark/growel and maby even a nip, Her way of saying (Stop That)the pup is not hurt but they sure get the messeage (don't they!)

"i have learned is not to ever hit them not to yell or scream when they bite you because it makes it a big deal, and more fun for your puppy."

WHAT!!! for goodness sakes what are you raising Clown Dogs "no afence" I have never seen any creature that considerd disaplin FUN!

Please dont get me wrong I am not advacating crulety or harsh treatment In any way, but proper corrections must be made.

"however i do have an english bulldog puppy that is 1 yr old now,and he still bites me."

REALY!! (LOL)

So when do you think he will STOP!?

My way takes about a 1-2 weeks at the out side.

Your way sounds like the perfect recipie for a spoiled rotten bratt or in this case dog.

Just my opinion so please dont take afence.

Regards
Deus
