This is an acquaintance of mine's dog who is in need, please let me know anything you feel woudl help. Here is what she wrote--

We finally have the details on Chili it is indeed the VERY early stages of kidney failure. Her kidneys have lost the ability to filter the proteins in her food. She needs a diet with little to no proteins. Basically, no meat of any kind. She is currently on Science Diet KD, but I'm still hoping to find something with less preservatives. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll cut for her or do whatever is necessary.

There is a homecooked version (the recipes were created by Hill's) for several of the Hill's prescription diets including the K/D...maybe she can ask her vet about them?
I have a link to the recipes of these and I'll post it later if I can find it.

This sounds like the same disease my dog had.
It was called glomerulonephritis.
She took blood pressure medicine as well as an asprin a day. We also had to feed her a low protein diet.
I purchased a prescription diet from my vets office.
It probably would be in your friends best interest to get the much needed information on the disease from the vets office.
I also tried holisitic methods to help as well. http://www.growinglifestyle.com/s827/kidney_failure/index.html

Jasmine did great for 8 months. Then she began to fail. Finally we had to put her to sleep. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life.
