Okay well, I'm planning on taking a 6 week course at a school to become a "master dog trainer". I need to bring an untrained dog with me to the course. By untrained, I/they mean preferably only taught house manners and minimal commands. This is because they want us and the dogs to learn together at the course. Anyways, I have two male shelties right now. Both have been trained quite extensively so I can't bring them and my mom's agreed to getting a third dog if I'm serious that this is what I want to do. So I recently started researching breeds. I've narrowed it down to rottweilers, gsds and pit bulls. One reason why I have these breeds on my list is because I think they're misunderstood and it'd be great to have a "vicious" labelled dog as my demonstration dog when I teach classes in the future. So anyways, I've read from places that pit bulls are dog aggressive. But other people argue that it depends on how the dog is socialized and if the dog is bred from good lines. So I thought I'd ask the more pit bull experienced people about it. My first choice would be to rescue one from the pound because I've met so many great pit bulls at the pound but..if it does indeed depend on how well the dog was bred, then I may go to a breeder. Anyways..if I were to go to a breeder and raise it as a puppy, socialize it and such, would there still be that "natural dog aggression" in it? I wouldn't want to risk my (future) dogs and foster dogs because I know how powerful these dogs are.

Thanks

There's always the possibility that an APBT (or AmStaff, or ANY bully breed just about) pup will grow up to be dog aggressive to some degree, but you can lessen the chance of that occuring by getting a dog from a line that usually produces non/low-dog aggressive dogs, making sure it's the opposite sex from your current dog(s), socializing, etc.

It's great that you're interested in a rescue, and there are plenty out there that would probably be good for the job. I would not go with a pup, but rather a young adult, at least 2 yrs old. By that point, their temperament should be pretty well set, and you'll have a better idea of exactly what the dog's all about than you would with a pup or adolescent.

If you want to email me, I know of someone also in Vancouver who may be able to direct you towards some good cantidates (whether APBT or not), my email is pitpalz@yahoo.com
