Pitbulls are a vicious and ruthless breed no matter how they are bred or raised...... I have heard so many people say this. I do not own a pitt, nor would I. And It is not because of their reps. I love all dogs (with the exception of most hounds, I dislike their baying) I would not own one because of the problems that I would have with everyone else............... I looked at adopting a dog the other day. He was absolutely beautiful. He was advertised as a Boxer mix. When I got there to see him, i barely saw any Boxer in him. He looked almost like a purebred AmStaff. Very happy and friendly and gentle, despite having been abused. I still would like to bring him home, but i can't cause of all the problems with neighbors and city ordinances..They are illegal in my city. I have enough problems with my neighbors cause of my 7 month old rottie. people need to realize that it is not the dog that is the problem, it is the owner that makes it that way. Just like guns aren't bad, it's the people behind the gun.. I want to give credit to all of you pitt owners and let you know that you are doing a wonderful job putting up with all the crap associated with owning a pitt.

I own a pit/boxer mix. She looks like she has more pit than boxer and she is the sweetest thing in the world. I resuced her from a sheltor a couple months ago and I can't imagine my life without her. I live in South Carolina and Ive had no problems with her thus far. But I understand your reservation. Thanks for the kind words.

"e was advertised as a Boxer mix. When I got there to see him, i barely saw any Boxer in him. He looked almost like a purebred AmStaff."

This can be very common. Sometimes they lie in hopes of the dog having better chances of being adopted. Other times the staff does it to save the dogs life. When I was doing recuse type stuff, I went to get a dog and they said she was a Boxer mix. When infact she was a Pit Bull. I asked them what would ever make you think this dog is a Boxer mix? They replied Well she's really a Pit Bull, where we recued her the city puts down Pit Bulls as soon as they come in. So they labeled her as a Boxer mix then when we went and picked her and about 10 others up.

I don't think that he was labled a boxer mix to save his life. See "Harley" is at a private no kill shelter. It is run by a very nice couple out of their own home. They even have a few extremely vicious pitts that should be put down cause they are dangerous, but they won't. They love and care for these animals despite there anger issues. But I am aware that the labeling happens. In fact in order to rent the house I am in I had to tell my landlord that my purebred rottie was a lab/GSD mix..... He fell for it.. I had to cause no one wanted a "vicious" dog on their property.

Pits have very 'dominant blood' that is to say, when mixed with another breed they will typically look mostly like a pit. This is often the case with german shpherds too, the mixes usually look mostly like a shepherd.
Especially if the boxer parent was a less typy specimen, with a longer nose a cobbier build. As there are so many variations on the look of a pit bull..it is hard to ever state with conviction exactly what a pit 'looks like', I have seen purebred pits with underbites that look as though they could have boxer in them. People who aren't certain of the parentage of a mutt will often just decide what the dog looks like it is mixed with, and go with that..when they may be completly wrong.

The dog I speak of was picked up on the streets as a stray in the city. They just put boxer mix so it wouldn't be put to sleep then they had it relocated(to the people i got her form, the rescue) with several other dogs of different breeds. So the dog wasn't part boxer with dominant Pit Bull characteristics. The dog was a Pit Bull labeled boxer mix so it could be saved. I didn't mean ALL dogs are called that because of that. I was just how common it is for this to happen.

PLEASE DO YOUR PART
It is your job as a decent human being to stand up against the ignorance of people. If i live in a place where they banned any dog I would fight tooth and nail against the ridiculous nature of it. Please help the town and world and try to educate them. Try to sit at town meetings and be heard. If you have any doubt on the American PitBull breed please e-mail me at happi2bnow@yahoo.com. I own 2 of these dogs and would gladdly let anybody meet them. I think if they met my pups they might leave with a different attitude towards them. thanks.

I have 5 male pit bulls, 1 female and 1 male amstaff. These are the most wonderful dogs. They are GREAT with chidren. I have 4 girls ages 8-6-4-3 they have never shown 1 bit of agression to them or myself. I personally would never own another breed. The people who say these negative ting have probably never owned or been around the breed. They are going by what they have herd on t.v. It does have alot to do with the way they are raised. As with ant dog or human for that matter.

I know what Ilovemypitbulls is talking about I own 4 and have 4 children the ages of 5mths-5yrs-8yrs-10yrs and 2 nephews and not once has mine ever showed aggression towards them. the only problem I had have with one of my pits is that she does not like guys with beards for the fact a friend of my husband taunted her since she was 10 weeks old he would say how she was a puss for a pit and stomp at her. I had told him not to do it because she will not like him..Well she is 2 yrs now and he wont get out of his vehicle. and unfortunally she cant stand any guy taht resembles him. But she is getting better because were teaching her not to be taht way and she is doing good now when guys come up to her with beards. But she will never forgive the idiot that did it to her in the first place.

My neghbors call the law on us all the time and my dogs dont leave the yard at all the go as far as our property line and will watch the neighbor kids play and the cops will show up and I did get told if they remain loose the next time they will have to take them and put them down..So we are doing our part to keep or babies with us. Unfortunally the neighbors will never except our dogs

You are correct about the small minded negative people out there that have not any clue about what wonderful dogs pitbulls/Am Staffs can be.
It seems to give the dog a much better chance of adoption if you can pick up another breed along with the word Pit. This is because of the negative publicity the dogs have. Many people going to the shelters to see dogs won't even give the dog a glance if they see the word pit. I always laugh because in my mind, the more pit the dog has in it the better the dog it will be.
Slowly, I think the pitbulls shall make a comeback. First, we need to get laws into effect to ban Back Yard Breeders. Let the knowledgeable reputable breeders handle the job. Goodness knows, there are thousands and thousands of unwanted WONDERFUL TEMPERAMENT pitbulls euthanized daily everywhere. What is their crime??? Why do people want to keep breeding these dogs knowing full well their fatality rate... Also, more and more people need to be made aware of the importance of spaying and neutering their pits. That is the answer not to continue breeding them!!
People should also consider taking their pits to ATTS or Canine Good Citizenship testing.
How about getting their pits to go and do "Pet Therapy" Or Agility?? That is what the organization I am affiliated with is trying to do now. Write letters to your local newspaper editors about "The Positive Side of owning Pitbulls." I also wrote a story to a local magazine about my shelter dog and my family.I was lucky enough to get it published!!! This is the only way we are going to turn the negative publicity surrounding our dogs to something positive. Show the public in full view what great, smart wonderful dogs we have!!!
