Hi guys! I just have a question. First of all just want to say I love pit bulls they are an awesome breed and just gorgous animals. My neighbors have 2 pits that they let run loose, these are not nice dogs. I have three dogs and 2 small children. On one occasion one of the pits was in my yard at night, I didnt see him and he was a few feet behind be growling, my husky charged at him and he ran off. But I am at my witts end, we have spoken with the neighbors, the animal control everybody and until these dogs hurt a human there is nothing anybody can do. I think I forgot to mention these dogs killed my other neighbors 2 small dogs, in their yard. Anyway I have read previous post about defending against them but am scared to death if I am walking in the house with my children at night one will attack. Does any body have any suggestions, do I tell my chidren to run they are 4 and 2. Do i tell them to be still, I just dont know. I believe these dogs are used to fight. They are very torn up at times, they are in my yard on a regular basis. I would of course try and get the kids in the car but dont know what to do. I just dont know much about the breed and their fighting habbits, I hope this question is not stupid but I know these animals (all dogs really) are capable of serious harm. Again I love the breed and hope i dont offend anyone with my question b/c I know any dog is mean if not loved and treated properly. I just dont know what to do, guess I also needed to vent a little. the animal control actually told me they had to wait until the animals hurt a human but they had several complaints about the dogs hurting other animals. Anyway thanks for any advice.

I'm curious, do you live in MD? That's the exact thing our AC told us when we called to report the neighbors' dog/human aggressive dogs. If pepper spray is legal in your area, you might get some to keep in your car or purse (if you carry one), that way if you are confronted by them, you have some means of deterring them. I would not tell your children to run away, as that may only excite the dogs more or elicit a predator type response from them. Instead (keep in mind that I am by no means an expert, so take this advice with a grain of salt, whatever that means ) I'd have them back away slowly, to the nearest safe place.

The dogs could also be torn up from fighting with other peoples' dogs, or even amongst each other, so they're not necessarily fighting dogs.

You might also try contacting city council or the like, explaining the loose dog problem, and possibly getting others in the neighborhood to complain as well. They'll probably start to worry if it looks like they may be in danger of losing a substantial number of voters. You can also try calling AC and telling them that you want a report filed against these dogs, or will be calling the state, see if maybe that stirs them into action. Then, if others complain as well, there's a chance of them taking some action. Your question is absolutely NOT stupid, and you have every right to be concerned about these dogs, it's a disgrace that some ACs are so useless that citizens are left to defend themselves against aggressive dogs (of any breed). Yours is a horrible situation to be in (speaking from my own experiences), one that you should not have to be in, and you have my full sympathy. Know though that not ALL pit bull owners are like this, and that most pit bulls are NOT like this... and I hope you continue to feel no anger towards the breed. Good luck in figuring something out!

I don't think its a stupid question at all. You have everyright to be concerned!! Forget the pepper spray I would get me a hand gun!!

It would be dead if it tried to attack me and that would be the right thing for a vicious dog. You would be doing the neighbors, the owners and the dog a favor. I can't believe the owners I hate people like that. Of any breed, but really hate the ones with dogs they know are MEAN. The AC sounds like the one we have here. Don't do anything but get paid.

Fighting dogs running from a husky...lol A fighting dog or any Pit Bull really shouldn't be running from another dog. Those dogs sound truly twisted, it should be the other way around. Liking people but fearless to other dogs. They sound like some people biting cur Pit Bulls to me. When I was a small child I had one of those come upon in the yard. My shepherd/husky mix broke his chain and chased that dog down the road with its tail tucked. He was a hero, the dog was giving me the evil stare. I tried to stay still but I don't know what I would have done had it came after me. I was only a little kid. My mom (who was inside and heard me call her) called the AC and they NEVER even showed up. She told them the Pit Bull was stalking me and everything but they never came.

What ever you do don't have the children run. That is the worse thing to do with anydog. Take Goob's advice about backing away SLOWLY. It works in most cases. And staying still and don't make sudden moves. Thats what my mom told me from the window when I was a little kid. Had I moved or got up to run the dog probably would have had me down in a second.

Thanks for the replies guys. I actually live in VA. I wish there was more I could do for the dogs, but its horrible the situation we are put in. The thing I was most concered about was my kids, I thought they shouldent run but wanted to reinforce this. I did think it was kinda funny when it ran from my husky, although she is big he could have whipped her in a heart beat. Not that im not glad she protected me cause that dog looked at me like i was lunch. I just wish my neighbors would be more responsible. And if I seeing things correctly from my yard they breed that dogs. For what godly reason I dont know, the two they have look half starved. Sad thing is AC would probly remove the animals for not being fed before they would for killing other animals. Anyway, happy new year all!

I'm a firm believer that if you feel your life is threatened by any means or anything, you have the right to take action.
Most of us in my town here in Texas, wouldn't think twice about taking a shot gun to them. Rat shot won't kill them but it will deter them.
It really ticks me off and makes me go over the edge to think that anyone can careless to the well being of children even if their not theirs!!
Your neighbors should care enoght that there are small children in the neighborhood, and his dogs as well as anyone elses, are ALWAYS a potential hazard. Even if they don't attack, they can knock a child over, accidentally trip or scratch..thousands of sinarios!!!!

Keep calling AC< City council, your local Police and Sheriff Dept...if you bug them enough they'lldo something about it.

Good luck. And tell your children to NEVER RUN or make sudden movements or noises. The best they can do is stand still.

3dogs, in your post you say they look half starved, what about taking pictures and showing the AC, then they could take them away for animal abuse. Sorry you are going thru that, almost makes you a prisner in your own home. It is truly upsetting to hear how AC wont do anything in these situations.
good luck

thanks for the replies, Honeybear that a good idea, I will need to fix my camera cause I am not getting that close. Also I have spoken with the neighbors numerous times and it doesnt work, they just insist their dogs do not get out and wouldent hurt a fly. Yet when they are chained, its a chain large enough to pull my car. I ask them why such gentle dogs need such large chains, they have no answer. Sad thing is I work for a Sheriffs Office and have spoken with the officers, legally there is not alot they can do its ACs job, but they did give me some suggestions on how to handle it. Just dont want to go those routes.

I would keep on AC. If you work for sherrif's office, then you have should have a upper hand. These dog's are being abused! There is no reason for this. If they are fighting dogs, they have a careless owner, which I doubt, these dog's wouldn't run. You will do these dog's a big favor by turning in the owner. They can't speak for their selves! You sound like a caring animal owner, too bad these dog's don't have someone like this!Good Luck! Shelby
