Actually, this isn't a stupid tactic and it works very well. There are numerous of ways to getting a puppy to stop biting and this one does work rather well. You don't try and make your dog throw up or anything, it is just a discomfort that is associated with biting on your hands. The puppy learns very quickly, he chews on hands and something rather uncomfortable happens to him. It only takes a couple times of this and the puppy very quickly catches on and realizes not to do it. I went to our local dog training club which is run by AKC obediance trainers and this is one of the tactics they use. You can choose not to do this, but it is done.

Or with your hand being in their mouth if you're not careful. That would make checking their teeth and mouth real fun. I guess it is one way that would work for some dogs, but there are other, less aversive ways to make a puppy stop biting.

what worked for my puppy was rawhide bones and alot of chew toys; now the only thing he bites is other dogs.
