I started having a disccussion with a familty member today about dogs and their tails. Why do dogs have tails?

A Pit Bull's tail shoud never be docked or it will loose its balance. Balance is supposedly key when fighting or tree climbing.

Here is a little story
Now I went to a kennel site that was really a disgrace. It was some backyard breeder's site. But anyway they had two unregistered dogs. An oversized dog, that did not resemble a pit at all. Not even a larger one looked like an American Bulldogs. It was supposedly from great lines and they bred it to their female. She was black and had her tail docked. They said probably so the litter couldn't be registered and fall into the wrong hands or something like that I have no idea why or what that is supposed to mean. They claim to disagree with fighting dogs and think its wrong, but then go to say Bobtail Holly is the gamemest 45lbs bitch they have ever seen and is a 1 time winner over a 100lbs Rottweiler/Doberman cur in like an hour or something. Which is ridiculous and an embarrasment. Its people like those who give other owners a bad name. A dogman would never put a pit on another breed of dog. They even called her a 1xw...LMAO. They said it against a rott/dobie CUR but they are proud. Well she did have a docked tail and probably fought just fine without it and I'm assuming the cur had one too. So if they fight fine without tails????? Doesn't hurt their balnace???

All other breeds of dogs are supposed to have tails for the same reason, balance. What type of balance? How does not having a tail effect the dog?

My Boxer, Rott & Dobie have to tail. They seem to be fine without them.

So really what are dogs tails for? Besides to wag them when their happy.

I have blue heelers. They NEED THEIR TAILS!!!

When herding the dogs use their tails as a rutter. Kindof like on a boat. Not only does it support the dogs balance but it allows them to spin and turn on a dime. They can shift their tails to one side and it will help keep them from rolling on such a quick turn.

Not only do the dogs need their tails for balance, but they were born with them. Don't you think that if they didn't need a tail they would be born with out one???

Its not only dogs that need their tail, but its animals in general. They do need it for balance when they make sudden turns or twist.. I really dont know anything about dog fighting, but im guessin they need it to perform certain manuvers. I personnally wouldnt dock my dog's tail. i rather have it wag when they see me

I would have to agree. I hate to admit it, but both of my female pups have docked tails. This isn't my fault, or doing though. The guy I got them from docked them before trying to sell them. He said that this was a sure way of keeping fighters from buying them.... I hate it! Pits have such cute waggily tails! I wish my girls had their tails! My Albino Dobe doesn't have a tail either. Again, not my fault. We got her from a shelter that way. Never thought about it....all 3 of my females have docked tails, all 3 of my males have their tails. Strange! Tails do help with balance. I've noticed that my girls will get off balance on occasion & they will try to swing their little stubs around to balance themselves.... It's pitiful! I hate it! Wish they all had tails!

If a pit doens't have its tail it has less ability. Which can be quite stiffling in a contest. And I can see the herding dogs too needing to make quick manuvers.

My Boxer still seem perfectly ajusted without a tail and its standard to dock their tails. She is agile and seems balanced in all situations. In russia they still fight Boxers so it just made me wonder.

I like Dobies. They are certainly different than pits but I like them. I always wanted an albino one, I guess just because of the way they look. Its standard for dobe's tails to be docked as is many other breeds. I was just curious how it affects them.
I can see through Meka's comparision of her docked n non-docked dogs, but I was still wondering about other breeds? Maybe those breeds are just adapted from the constant docking of that breeds tails?

There is a breed of heelers called Stumpy tails, they are born with a tail 4 inches or shorter, this is natural.

Both my dogs have docked tails as well, They were done before they adopted us.
