My 11mo blue pit has chronic ear scratching problems, to the point where she scratches til it bleeds and they are very sensitive.

She also scratches her lips pretty often and I noticed a quarter-sized patch of missing hair on her back.

I know that she is allergic to bees since she got stung this past summer and had a reaction. I am assuming that these current problems are allergy-related but I need more advice.

Can anyone tell me what I should do?

I have read that blue pits are particularly vulnerable to patchy or thin hair but I want to make sure this missing patch is not due to some serious underlying condition.

I love this pup with all my heart and want her to be comfortable and itch-free.

Thanks,
Adam

Sounds like it could possibly be some type of mange..... That or an allergy of some type. Have you been feeding her anything different? I had a lady suggest Neem Oil when one of my Pit pups had a rash on her tummy. Also had another lady tell me to put rubbing alcohol on it, then rub cortizone cream on it. Had one more tell me to use Betadine shampoo.... It's supposed to clear up any infection & promote healing. Maybe she just has dry sking. Try a good conditioner after bathing her & see if that helps any. I have no clue myself, as to what it could be, but I just wanted to give you the suggestions that were given to me. Hope I've been of some help. I hope your baby gets well soon. Give her a hug for me! Thanks.

By the way.... the only thing I actually tried was the rubbing alcohol & the cortizone cream. It was the first suggestion, so I tried it first. It cleared up my lil girl's rash..... If it doesn't clear up though, I would suggest giving the Betadine shampoo & the Neem Oil a try....

Thanks for the reply.

I think that she does have really dry skin; I remembered that I tried using a conditioner last time I bathed her and it seemed to help out a lot, but I still don't know what to think of the small hairless patch. Anyone?

Also, she has cropped ears so they're obviously more vulnerable to getting dirty, I'll admit I sorta neglected cleaning her ears for awhile after I got her just due to ignorance, but now that I'm aware that they must be cleaned regularly can anyone suggest a good method? Or would a simple damp cotton swab work fine?

sounds like it could also be a food allergy. Food allergies are very common and the culprit is a certain ingredient like corn, chicken, wheat etc. PLease go to the regular dog site and do a search on"Food for thought" there is a ton of stuff on this.

It's possible that it's a food allergy, allergies aren't uncommon in APBTs. Are his ears infected? If so, what type of infection was/is it?

I would have the vet do a skin scrape on the missing patch of fur, just to be sure it isn't mange, and check the ears/mouth to see if there's some sort of infection or other underlying cause, then go from there.

honeybear, thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely check out that article.

goob, her ears may be a little infected, there are numerous little scabs from scratching, some with slight infection showing.
Can you reccommend a product that will give her ears some relief while I figure out what the allergen may be?

Ear infections in dogs are the same as in people... the infection is in the ear canal, and drains out the "outer" ear, if that makes sense. The scabs you see are probably just from her (sorry for calling her a "him" last post) digging at them, though the fact that you say they seem infected could indicate that her immune system is weakened from something else.

You have to have a vet check the fluid in her ears if it's an infection, because there are different things that cause infections, and different treatments for each. Then they usually prescribe a treatment (ear drops or oral meds).

I know that a vet visit is best but I just don't have the funds as of now so I'm going to assume that it's a food allergy and try to narrow it down.
I realized that I still have a number of prednisone steroid tablets for future bee sting reactions. I did a little research on the tablet to make sure there would be no contraindications and so I gave her one last night at midnight. So far, the steroid has suppressed every symptom that she has had and her relief is obvious.
So now I suppose I will design a regimen to indicate her allergy. I will post the results here in case it might help someone with the same problems.

Thanks again for the helpful replies,
Adam
