What are the pros and cons against them, all of my animals are tattooed except Czar who was microchipped as a wee pup before we got him, now my fiance wants to get my female done even though she has a tattoo. Now my whole problem with them is that if they were lost how many people would be honest enough to go to the spca or a vet to find out if they have a microchip or just keep the dog if it is a nice dog, it isn't like a tattoo where it can obviously be seen and easily identified, as each vet has their own 3 letter code at the beginning where there are multiple microchip companies and only they can tell if it is theirs or not. anyways lemmie know IP: Logged |

Tatoos can wear over time, making them nearly impossible to read (less common in shorthaired, often pink bellied bullies, but still happens). In addition, it's easy enough for someone to change the number, or color it out completely (though again, that would look suspicious on most APBTs). Not all vet clinics, and even animal shelters have scanners, so there's always the risk that if your dog gets picked up, it won't be scanned anyway. There's also the issue of there not being a universal scanner, so if you have one brand chip, and their scanner isn't compatable.... oops . Both methods have their share of negatives, or at least un-positives. My advice to someone thinking about getting their dog chipped (a bit late for you though, since your pup is already done) is to call various places (vets, shelters, AC) in your area and see if they scan, if so, what brand they use. Then have the dog chipped with the most common brand, and if you want added security, get them tatoo'ed as well. Some people I know also add onto the tat "AVID" or "HA" (home again), so that a person who's aware of microchipping will know to scan the dog. IP: Logged |
