My nieghbors have 2 pit bulls. The female seems to be fine. The male when outside on his lead lunges at us so hard he flips himself over in a flip. I have a mixed dog shepard/whippet ,mix. My dog Maggie pays them no mind. However they scare me to death. If my dog (of 12 years) is outside when my neighbor lets his pitbulls outside, I grab Maggie real quik and bring her inside. After I bring Maggie inside, I feel like I am having a heart attack, from being so scared.
I know one day the male pit bull will break his lead. I am scared to death to be in my own back yard. What can I do?
I am scared to death to even let my own dog outside. I can not even have a cookout outside because of my neighbors dogs.
They know I am afraid of thier dogs and do not seem to care,
Thier dogs are in the house for at least a week at a time.
Sincerely,
scared to death to be in my own back yard in rocky point nc

If you feel safe talking to the neighbor about the situation, go to them, let them know your concerns, and try to work something out so everyone can be happy. That would also give you a chance to find out from the owner if the male dog is acting out of aggression, and if so, whether he's dog aggressive (fairly normal for pit bulls), human aggressive (not normal for pit bulls), or both (neither type of aggression is good for you, BUT it's good info to have if you have to go to AC about it). If you don't feel safe talking to them, or they brush you off/act rude/whatever when you go to talk to them about the matter, call animal control. Tell them about the situation (and your fears) and ask that they send someone down to assess the situation. If they don't, call them again. And again, until you get results. MAKE SURE that they document your complaint, even if you have to ask for a copy of the document. That way, if anything does happen, you have proof that the owner KNEW the dog would cause problems, and acted negligently. Other than that, I can't give much advice, so I hope this has helped a bit.

I just wanted to say that I'm sorry that you are in this situation. It doesn't do the breed any good. I think the previous reply gave you perfect advice. I'm so glad that my pitbull has not shown any signs of dog aggresion yet or even seem to have a prey drive.

Yeh, its a real shame when a pitbull gets stuck with bad owner, it must make them happy when someone else is frightened by their dogs. It makes me mad!

When you have to take your dog outside make sure you stay with him at all times and make sure he is leashed because chances are if that pitbull did get loose he would head straight for your dog! I would follow Goob's advice.

First of all, I want to condem those owners of that poor dog. Its horrible that they either made him like that or allow himto behave in that manner. Is it not bad enought they are stuck with a horrid reputation? Instead of helping the breed strive with a good rep, he's puting them down and showing the public they are bad, and should be banned ect....

As for you, keep your pup on a harness, you'll have much better control and can yank him back in a hurry if need be, with no injury to your pet from a collar!! They can chokehim if for some reason you must pull him out of a situation.

Have an officer sit outside your home one day when thye are walking their dog and allow him to see what he does. Confront him then and if there are any probs, the officer will be there to assist.
