Some of you my remember my post from a couple weeks ago. I adopted a pit/mix from the sheltor about a month ago. Her name is Zoe and she is the best dog we have ever had, anyway, when we got her she was really skinny. Ive been feeding her three times a day. I give her a cup and a half of dry dog food and half a cup of can food at each meal and lots of dog treats. Ive really been spoiling her.

I took her to the vet to have a check up after I got her from the sheltor and she weighted 38 pounds and had a very skinny stomach. She has to go back to the vet to be rechecked next week and I can't wait to see what she weighs now because her stomach is really feeling out. She also looks more like a pit now that she is filled out. I guess my questions is how much and how many times a day do you feed your dogs? This may be a questions I need to ask my vet, but Ive received such good advice from all of you I wanted to get your opinion. THANKS

Goo (10 yrs old, pretty lazy in the house, but still plays catch or goes for a walk/run a couple times a day) gets either 1 cup dry food (Natural Balance) and either 1/2 or whole can of food (Nutro) every night. She also has dry food (same as above) down all the time in my room, and picks at it when she gets hungry. If I notice she's eaten a lot of dry that day, I give 1/2 can, if I notice she hasn't (some days she doesn't touch it), I give a whole can. She's been steady at around 56-58 lbs for the past several months now (since I finally found a food(s) and stuck with it).

Haley was about 20 lbs underweight when we got her, and it took about 2 months for her to get back to fairly normal weight. As long as she's gaining, it sounds like you're on the right track with her

i've got a ? why do you mix can food with dry food? i only feed my dog dry food, is that bad, or harder to digest to only feed them dry food. i was just curious bc my girl's pretty skinny and i feed her science diet, 2-3 times a day. we run though, i'm just trying to faten her up a bit, but i want her to get enough exercise. is science diet a good food? i think it's the one they call natures best.

Before I switched Goo over to her current food, her "meal" was canned food only, and she always had dry food to pick at. I'm not sure why, that's just how we had always fed the dogs. When I switched her to a better food, I wanted to feed more of the dry food, because it really is better than the canned stuff (canned food is a lot of water, and often has lower quality ingredients, the ones with decent/good ingredients are usually really expensive to feed a large dog), but at the same time, I didn't want to cut out the canned food completely, since she'd been getting it for most of her life. So the canned and dry ended up being an ok compromise, but if I started over with a dog who'd never had canned food, I'd probably just stick with the dry, and occasionally give canned as a treat. I also wet Goo's kibble because she was sometimes bolting it (gulping it down) and belching a lot afterwards, which got me worrying about her bloating.

I don't know much about different foods, but from what I understand (and from looking at the ingredients) SD is overpriced and overrated, but is better than some foods available. It's primarily grains, which commonly cause allergic reactions, and aren't really great as the main component of a dog's diet (while dogs are omnivorous, they certainly aren't cows or chickens ). You might check on the main "dog" board, as they had a good thread with tons of info on food. Also, if she's still scrawny, a food with a higher fat content might help to fill her out. If not, you might feed her more, as activity level can really change how much a dog needs to eat. Our hyper, always-on-the-go Dachshund, at 11 lbs, eats 1/2 of what Goo does (1/2 cup 1/4-1/2 can), and Goo weighs 5 times as much as Annie. Keep in mind though that less weight is often better, especially for growing pups, as you don't want too much weigh on their still-developing bones.

I feed nellie and chief a 1.2 kg can of pedigree pal a day each but they also have about a cup and a half of dry food as well. Am I overfeeding?? Both are not overweight. Just curious.

I feed my guys 2 cups a day of dry food maybe once in a blue moon do they get wet as they drink plenty of water and wet food isn't exactally the best thing for their teeth, therefore I am personally against it.
I work in a pet store that mainly specializes in Holistic dog foods like GO! Natural, foundations, Natural Balance, and Wellness are our biggest sellers. I was reading and doing a little research on the different foods and was reading the Whole Dog Journal and they listed plenty of holistic dog foods and amung the 2 that they recomend NOT to feed your dogs is Science Diet Natures best or Purina's Beneful as they are not true "holistic" foods sure they meet affco but so does pedigree and alpo which are full of corn and on their recomended daily feeding guidelines I would be feeding about 8 cups of food a day because of all the fillers and grains that are in the foods. It also depends on the activity level of your dog and the weight of your dog on how much you should be feeding per day and if there are any "extras" to the diet like people food.
