I will getting a new puppy in a couple of weeks. I remember reading somewhere, that it is a good idea to crate your puppy while you are way. Is that absolutely neccesary? I will have a room in my home set aside for the dog. But the room doesn't have an actual door (kind of an old kitchen area) I will be putting up a baby gate in the entry way.

Thanks

in my opinion crate training is the best way to go. hey but if you have an entire room just for your pup then that sounds cool too. i hope its not carpeted. the baby gate won't work for very long though you'll discover that your little guy is going to be a great little escape artist. i would recomend something that he can't climb up, or jump over. like a piece of ply wood or something, they'll cut it for you at most hardware stores like lowes or home depot just tell them the length and width. also you could purchase a door at home depot if you find you can't seem to keep him in his 'area'. but i still think that crating is the easiest way to house break him. if he's in a crate he won't have as much space, so he won't want to go to the bathroom in it. but if he has a much larger area then he won't care, and you'll be scrubbing the floor. good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crating would be the best way to go. I tried a baby gate when I first got Trick and by the time, I got home he had chewed a hole through it and gotten out anyways. You can always use the crating technique as they get older, too. Pretty soon, jumping that gate will be a cake walk, if the pup doesn't dismantle it first!

I agree with the others that in most cases, a babygate won't hold in the "average" APBT. benny boy's suggestion was good, using a board instead, but then there's the chance of the dog jumping it, so a door is usually your best bet at keeping them in.

Crating IS the best (or only) option for some people and some dogs, but there are a lot of factors to be considered. How long are you gone out of each day? If for longer than about 5 hrs, can someone get home to take puppy out? Is the dog going to sleep in the crate, too? Those are just a few I can think of right now. It's really not fair to a dog (especially an active breed like the APBT) to keep them crated 8 hrs a day while you work, then for more time while you go to the store, etc, or while you're sleeping. It's also not fair to a pup to expect them to "hold it" while you're gone all day at work, so you'd need someone to come take them out. Some people don't have any choice but to crate for long hours, but if you can get the room fixed up for the pup, it might be a better option.

As an aside though, even if you don't crate your pup while you're gone, it's a good idea to get a crate anyway and get them used to being in it, especially if you ever plan to travel with them (car or plane), or may have to board them for any period of time. That way it doesn't come as a big shock if they DO have to be in a crate for a period of time.
