Does anyone have health insurance on any of their pets? I'm thinking about signing up with petcos quickcare program. It really sounds pretty good. I've spent about $1400 on two of my cats over the past year for emergency care. I could only imagine the expense if one of my dogs was seriously ill. Jenny IP: Logged |

There was a question like this on the dogs-all types forum. We don't personally use pet's insurance, I don't think I've ever heard of it over here but I might ask my vet. Anyway we have a savings account which money goes into every week. We have a certain limit that we don't spend under and there is always money for emergencies like vet bills, children expenses, car expenses and so on. It's not as hard to save as people think, the key is to have an amount of money taken out that you won't miss every week and it accumulates very quickly!! That was before I knew there was pet's insurance, and although I haven't needed it, I might check it out. [This message has been edited by neek (edited 12-03-2003).] IP: Logged |

i did it with petsmart a while back. i think it was like $30 - $40 a month. i wasn't to happy with it. i can't speak for pet co. but i know that petsmart they still make you buy the medications and pay for different treatments they do reduce the price though. except neutering. they do that for free, thats what got my attention. and say for example you have to get rid of your dog or god forbid the dog passes away you still have to pay them through the end of the year. not the first of the year, a year from when you sign up. this applies to canclations aswell. so think about first. it's a year long commitment. not to mention i hated the vets. they were cocky little b*****ds. they diagnosed my dog with something other than what he had and he had an allergic reaction to the medicine they made me pay for and then when i went back they told me they were sorry, but there was no way they could give me my money back for the medicine the first gave me, and tried to charge me for to other antibiotics. i told them where they could put their antibiotics and said they could go ahead and send my bill to a collections agency. I've never been impressed with petsmarts prices at their banfield pet hospital either. I've read about their wellness plans I think is what they call them. the insurance I'm looking at is a monthly commitment. It cost's $10.75/month and appears to cover most accidents and illnesses. It does not cover routine stuff like vacinations etc, or altering. I'm not too great at saving. My husband and I are the prime example of living pay check to paycheck. We have a lot of debt since we don't have med. ins. and all those other fun things that come along like car repairs. Jenny IP: Logged |

We got pet insurance when we adopted our dog via petfinder's insurance program...it was free for 3 months, and then you could buy it if you wanted to. We decided to give it a try, and contacted http://www.sheltercare.com/ for a policy quote. For $9.95 a month our dog is covered for almost anything for up to $1,000. Wouldn't you know it, less than a week after we signed up for it, our dog ate something, and ended up having internal blockage- which required surgery. The total bill was a little over $1200.00 from the vet, our insurance company paid out $1000 without any questions. Well worth it, and I will continue my policy as long as my pooch is around. thats great to hear. I think it would be really beneficial. I think sheltercare insurance is through quickcare which is through petco. My 2 new kitties get 2 months of sheltercare ins. for free too. I think I will be taking a plociy out on my pity and my beagle. Jenny IP: Logged |
