Okay, this time I'm not writing about my own dog, but about my closest friends. She has a 2 1/2 year old male pit. He's the most beautiful dog, and is very sweet, but lately has been digging...wut I would refer to as BOMB SHELTERS. I'll get to that in a minute... He is in a large pin outside her house. He's always been outside ever since she got him but brings him inside occassionally to sleep and takes him for walks every single day. He's very well trained, walks on a leash just fine, can jump WELL over the height of his fence but never tries to get out. And he won't run if he is off a lease. He does, however have a very BAD bloodline, and although Emily raised him to be a sweet dog, he has attacked every animal he's ever come in contact with (except for Emily's other dog, Ginger). This includes attacking his mom, sisters, and brother. The digging started about 4 months ago. And when I say digging, I mean SERIOUS digging. He has 2 tunnels throughout his pen. both tunnels starting out at one end and ending up at the other. That's not just the strangest part. The tunnels at the beginning are SO DEEP. Emily is 5'8" and when she got in the hole, she was eye level with the ground. Now keep in mind that there are 2 of these tunnels that drop that low (exactly the same depth) and then tunnel straight across, about 14-15 foot. Emily and I both were able to crawl completely through and come out the other sides. Anyone wanna explain THAT TO ME? IP: Logged |

Maybe he is bored. Pit Bulls are very busy dogs and really need a job to do. Perhaps he has found his job, since it sounds like he really doesn't have anything else to do but wait to go for his daily walk. Jenny IP: Logged |

I agree, sounds like he's very bored, and making up his own "game". Can she find a way to give him more exercise? If not (and maybe even if she does), he'll probably just keep doing it. Just make sure he doesn't dig OUT of the kennel!

Let me explain a bit more. It's not like he just does it every once and a while. He does it constantly. If he's not eating, or sleeping, he's digging. Even if you get in the pen and try to play with him. He ignores you and digs faster... Maybe someone in China is yelling, "Jake"... IP: Logged |

I'm having the same problem with my female, although she hasn't dug tunnels yet! LOL I can't give any advice except concrete the holes but it sounds like he will just dig another one!! Sorry I can't be more helpful. IP: Logged |

does he have toys in his pen. pits love basketballs, my girl loves to shred softballs on a daily basis. if you have a tree in the pen you could even hang something for him to bite and swing on like a thick rope or a tire. i've never heard of a dog digging like that before, maybe he smells something. have you ever seen the movie funny farm with chevy chase. Dog aggression is common in the breed if you didnt know. Dogs from the best bloodlines want to fight other dogs, its a natural thing. IP: Logged |
