"Blanket??? There was no blanket on that chair..."

"I have it and yooouu don't!"

Why grandmother, what white brows you have

And the obligatory sleeping dog pic...

Nice Pics Goob...
Your dogs are cute.
I like the picture where Goo & Haley's smiling. And the Haley's Comet one (the 1 where she's covered w/ stars) The perfect canvas for some star-stickers !!
I also like the last pic, w/ your Datsun 280
ZX. J/K, i don't think i can spell it correctly, is it "Dachshun"??? I don't know, i'm clueless.... I remember way back about you mentioning that she's trained in search & rescue. Am i right? If so, that's awesome! I heard that they can actually do quite well too.

Thanks much Goo is basking in your praises, such a vain beastie she is, the slightest thing and her head blows up like a balloon

ZX.

She's in tracking classes right now, but we're not planning on doing any SaR work, as she's already 5 yrs old and it takes years to train for that level. I do have thoughts of eventually getting another Dachsie and training them for SaR, but that would be years down the road. For now, we'll just stick with the competitive stuff, where we don't have to worry about anyone dying if we (that would be *I*, since Annie's just taking direction off me ) screw up... And yes, you were close on the spelling, it's Dachshund

It's possible, I got it from petsmart a couple years ago, it's nylon, and has held up pretty well, but she needs a new one before long.

Mayday's mom, I post on several other boards as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if you have seen Haley's mug before ;D

May I ask what happened to her leg? My parents dog Duncan was diagnosed with bone cancer June of 2002 and had to have his front right leg amputated. Thankfully the cancer has not returned. I noticed that they left some of the shoulder bone behind on Haley as well.
Do you have any problems with her trying to use the nub to get up? Duncan sometimes gets sores on his nub from using part of the remaining limb.
The new vet my parents are using said that it should have been a clean amputation with nothing left behind.
Do you have to do anything to deter sores?

Someone found her wandering around on the street with her leg broken, and brought her into the vet clinic my mom works at. They in turn sent her to AC for the standard holding period, but some techs went and got her after it was up. By that time, her leg (it had been an open break, and someone had apparently tried to "fix" it before she was found by wrapping it up with electrical tape, people are sick) was infected to the point that they had to amputate it, so the techs raised the money to get it done. Techs only pay 1/2 price for animal care, so my guess is that the vet who did the surgery (the owner of the clinic) decided to scrimp on the surgery a bit since he wasn't gettign paid full price (yes, he's the type of person who would do that). The other vets there have also said that it should have been leveled off with her body, but unless she starts to have problems, we're just going to leave it alone.

She was around 8 months old when she had the leg amputated, and is about 3 yo old, so she's pretty well adapted at this point. At one point, about 6 months after the amputation, she started having problems with fluid buildup in her "stump", and that had to be drained about once a week. When further health problems became noticeable, we (we didn't own her at the time, but the person who owned her was a friend, and we were still involved in her medical care) had some tests done and found out that she was diabetic. Diabetics often have trouble healing, and once her diabetes was under control, she had no more problems. She occasionally bangs it on something and bruises it or scrapes it, but nothing serious.

One problem that we have had is that since there is little blood circulation to some parts of the area around her stump, it gets cold when she's outside in the winter, and her vets have advised us to watch for frostbite. I don't know if that's something limited to her situation, or if poor blood circulation is common, but it is something to consider.

If your parents' dog is still trying to use to nub, you might want to try some sort of protective cover... a baby sock with a bit of neoprene in the bottom pulled over it, something like that.
