I'm sure your wife will come around once she sees the pitbull pup. They are positively the cutest pups around and they are sooo cuddly!!!! Good luck in choosing your pup and please make sure it is bought from a registered breeder. IP: Logged |

There are several APBT and AmStaff registries out there, some reputable, many not. To make it simple, in the US, the ONLY reputable APBT registries are the UKC (United Kennel Club, NOT Universal Kennel Club Inc) and ADBA (American Dog Breeders Association). The only reputable AmStaff registry is the AKC (American Kennel Club). What exactly are you looking for in a dog? Do you have any specific types of activities in mind that you want to do with them (conformation, weight pull, agility, etc)? Or is it just to be a pet, couch buddy, walking/jogging partner, etc? Are you set on getting a dog from a breeder, or would you consider a rescue dog? Is a high level (note I said high, not just a bit) of dog aggression going to bother you? One more question... have you checked the area you plan on moving to for breed specific legislation? I know Broward County has banned "pit bulls", and several other counties down that way... make sure before you get a pup! A good APBT or AmStaff breeder should be having hips x-rayed and evaluated by OFA or PennHIP, eyes checked for genetic disorders (PRA, etc), certain lines are likely to produce dogs with heart disorders, which are passed through lines (genetics again) and can be tested for. Ask about all these things, and if they get dodgy, seriously consider what you might be getting into. Nobody wants their pup to die young because of a disease that could easily have been prevented if the breeder had tested their breeding stock and culled affected dogs. IP: Logged |

make sure you do check out your county by-laws, I live in Canada, and I am on 126th street however on 120th street and on pit's are banned so I was lucky and live 6 blocks away from the bylaw which is really weird. So check out the laws first before you bring home that puppy and do check out the lines for yourself as well if you are planning on getting from a breeder that way you also know what you are getting into for a dog and if you do go the rescue route try to get some sort of history on the dog and have it temperment tested as well(I do say this for all dogs you never know what you can end up with) and a good through vet check from an impartial veterinarian IP: Logged |

Here is good info on finding a good breeder and choosing a pup: http://americanpitbullterrier.org/choosing_a_dog.htm You might also contact these people to see if they can direct you to a reputable breeder in the area... http://savethepets.com/ Or if you decide to check out some rescue dogs, here are several sites you might try: A cute little red tri-color pup http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=2274112 And a floopy earred little brindle girl http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=2163225 PBRC- http://pbrc.net/dogpages/south/dogsouth.html Pet Harbor- http://petharbor.com/ IP: Logged |

I have to admit that when my husband said he wanted to get a pit bull that I was mortified. But after we had taken in a couple that had been neglected I realized that these dogs are great with people! .... and I have 3 children. I have dealt with only 3 pit bulls but they were all very different, from jumping all over you hyper to laid back calm and loveable. But whenever any of them were around my kids(ages 7,2 & 8 mos) they were very patient and easy. Enough to make me permanently keep our last rescuee and bring her in the house full time with us. Hopefully for your wife's benefit she will learn how loving these dogs really are. IP: Logged |
