My boyfriends mate's female pitbull had a litter of 8 pups on Saturday night, they are all healthy as far as I know and she is very attentive. Anyway the problem was when she was delivering her pups in the laundry, Danny,(owner) was with her as my boyfriend told him to be around for the birth to make sure she could deliver properly, and she started growling at him him each time a pup was born. She would clean the pup then growl savagely at him. At one stage she even lunged at him, he was that scared he jumped on the washing machine to get away from her. She never bit him but made it quite clear that she didn't want him there.

She is normally very friendly with people especially Danny and he was wondering why she went cranky like that? I have no idea except that she was protecting her pups. She has also been leaking a dark greenish liquid from her vulva and he wants to know if thats normal. Her and the pups are going for a vet-check on Thursday. Any thoughts????

That greenish stuff you are talking about is usually 'meconeum'(something like that)Its from a puppy being in the womb a little too long, and it defecates into its placenta, when it breaks the pupoop leaks out.It happens to human women, too. It should never go on for more than about 2 days though,if it does, its very likely an infection, with can render her sterile or even kill her if not treated!

The greenish liquid could be an indication of a puppy who didn't make it and possibly stuck. This could be causing her pain which would explain her growling - she is protecting her body. A dog in pain will feel threatened and NOT want anyone nearby. Tell your boyfriend not to take her behavior personally and get her to the vets ASAP!! Don't wait until Thursday. If there is a puppy still inside her she could go toxic and this could kill her and her puppies. We had to do a C-section on a litter once and the mom was producing a greenish fluid we saved a pup but the other didn't make it and the umbilical cord had stained green. If anything call the Emergency Clinic tonight and explain what is happening and see what they say.

Please let us know how things go.

Thanks for the advice ignergehl and jas! Thats quite scary if she has got a dead pup inside her, Jas but I'm glad you suggested a possible cause as now I will tell my boyfriend when he gets home from work to contact Danny and get her to the vet ASAP. If one of the puppies did poop inside her, then that usually means that it is distressed, dosen't it?? If thats the case then maybe a puppy did die inside her. How awful!!!

I will post tomorrow and let you's know how it went. I will definately INSIST that he take her to the vet tonight..

Hi, he took the dog to the vet this morning and the vet said he didn't think there were any dead pups but he gave her a shot to help her expel any afterbirths that might be trapped. Apparently you have to make sure there is an afterbirth expelled after each pup. UGGHHH!! I didn't know that, I'd be hopeless breeding dogs!! I bred one litter and that was enough for me!!

My dog just had pups and has had the same thing. She saw the vet and he said she was fine. not only did I take her to the vet but I also asked around to a few breeders I know of In Dallas Texas and they said that it can possibly be bad, but isn't alsways. Either you already took your dog so Im glad to hear shes all good.
As far as the growling goes. My female is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever had and she was still very protective during birth. She wasn't that way towards us when she was giving birth but shes still very protective with some people and our other pit. It's really just going to vary with dog to dog. Well congrats!!

Sorry if you were misinformed true-pits, its actually my boyfriend's mate's pitbull that had pups. I wish they were mine as I would have taken her to a vet as soon as she had finished whelping. I'm sorry to anyone that reads this but I can't STAND BYB!!!!!
