I have a 9 month old red nose pit bull. She occasionally holds one of her back legs stiff for about 5 seconds at a time. She doesnt cry and when she holds it stiff she continues to walk or run or to do whatever it was that she was doing. What could this be from? IP: Logged |

That is a condition called luxating patella, where the kneecap slides in and out of place, causing the leg to go stiff like that.Eventually,it wears a groove in the bone and then the kneecap wont stay in place at all, causing lameness.I have an 8 yr. old boston terrier with a mild case of it,and I dont expect to ever have surgury done, but if it is happening frequently, you are eventually going to have to get it fixed,as it can be very painful. My last dog Jess used to run with one leg cocked up like you would see small terriers do when they run, it was so funny!! I didn't think it was a problem but I think it's totally different to yours. I will read your post again. IP: Logged |

can dogs get that when they are so young? can you have your dog screened for it, like with hip displexia(sp?)? IP: Logged |

ignergehl - are you a vet? Have you seen and tended to this dog? If not please don't inform people of a condition their dog has. Only a qualified vet can accurately diagnose the problem. So djohnsen take you dog to the vet to find out for sure! IP: Logged |

Well he ASKED??!!And that IS an extremelly common condition with the momentary stiff leg being the only symptom. We get about three a day in the vets office where I work(Im in training for the vet tech position there). So, maybe I should have said that luxating patella is the POSSIBLE cause of the symptom. And maybe you should have been less patronizing with your're "are YOU a vet?"comment!!Other folks cuss and insult AND make pat statements on this site, why must I be the one to get into trouble? Jas wasn't having a go at you by the sounds of it, she just commented because you actually diagnosed the dog without seeing it. It might be that problem that you said or it could be something else, but she is right in saying that because IF the owner of this dog thinks that it has what you suggested and DOSEN'T get surgery right away when you said it shouldn't need it and if it IS needed now for a totally different problem, that would be bad "diagnosing" and you would probably get the blame. No hard feelings hey???? IP: Logged |

It means Laughing out Loud! you guys are right,it could be something else, its just that those symptoms are classic of that condition.I didnt mean to say that he shouldnt get it checked out immediatly, because he should.I should have elaborated and said that my dogs case was mild so he didnt need surgery now, possibly never.I hope we didnt scare him off and he comes back on and says what it is! Thanks Neek, that is precisely my point. Its important that we let people know they should see a vet if they suspect a problem. It _could_ be something as simple as a scraped pad, puncture or pulled muscle, my dogs have had the exact same symptom and it turned out to be nothing serious. Its good of people to make suggestions but no point scaring someone unnecessarily, especially without asking further questions - how long, how often etc.... I appreciate that you are in training to become a tech, but that still doesn't make one a vet. And no, the same rules apply for everyone as far as language and content so again I ask, PLEASE be careful what you suggest. Thanks IP: Logged |
