I'm not exactly sure what to tell you, but from my experience with many different breeds of dogs including pit bulls, they are most likely to attack, if you are being harmed. And i'm saying this in a good way, a loving dog wont just attack, but they can tell when you are being hurt. I own a half am staff half pit bull and she's loving but if i was in danger i think she would do something about it.

Some will, some won't. It depends on the individual dog, and you never know until you're in that situation. Many APBTs (both well bred and not) don't have the type of confidence against a person to go up against one if things get serious... some do, and would rise to the occasion. They either do, or they don't, trying to make a dog into something it's not (ie: a non-protector into a protector) will only result in a very screwed up dog, so accept your dogs for what they are, and hope for the best

I'll also say that most often, the best protectors are those who aren't outwardly aggressive, most are actually friendly or at the very least indifferent towards new people and situations. That's because they are confident in themselves... a fearful or insecure dog may put on a big show, but when things go bad, they're usually the first to bail out.

My Mayday is the biggest breed of wimp (he is scared of the hamster). One night I was doing laundrey (its in our storage room that has a seperate entrance from outside) and Mayday was acting really strange. He had both sets of heckles up and was acting very shifty. I asked him what was going on and I heard a noise in the back of the room and Mayday started growling something fierce! He wouldnt let me get in front of him to look and kept wedging himself in front of me. I saw someone moving in the back of the room and I ran like a bat out of hell back up the stairs. When I was on the phone with 911 I heard Mayday going beserko! He sounded soo viscous. and then when I went to try to get him inside he was jumping at the fence. For an hour after that he would not come inside he layed down on the porch right in front of the door and just kept growling. It was such strange behaivor for him. Im sure glad he did it though. Who knows what would have happened without him there.

It's good to have a dog that alerts you to something strange, my dog nellie saved a cats life and she barks all the time because we live right at the back of a cricket and two football fields. It is always dark and is only illuminated when there are games being played sometimes at night. Last year a neighbour that lives two doors down found her ridgeback dead in her laundry, she didn't take her to the vet when she died, just buried her but she thinks the dog got poisoned by someone throwing something over her fence from the fields as her dog continuly barked through the night, so I end up telling Nellie to pipe it down when she barks at night and I continually worry if I will find her dead the next morning.
Its a horrible feeling!!
