The most amazing thing just happened!! I was doing the housework when my beautiful pit x nellie starting barking and scratching frantically at the back door. I went out to see what was happenen and Chief ( my other pit x) had a cat bailed up against the fence and when I called him he grabbed the cat in his mouth and shook it from side to side. the cat was screaming, and I couldn't get the cat out of his jaws, he was biting down harder when nellie put her head down and charged him, grabbed hold of his cheek flap and was pulling him. He only let go of the cat because he thought she wanted to play with him. Right now the cat is in shock but it is walking around my house slowly. I would hate to think what would have happened had she not tried to stop him, as he didn't listen to me! I love her so much, she is the best!! I now have to find the owner of the cat and explain what happened in case it has any injuries. I looks like a persian cross manx as it only has a stumpy tail. My heart is still pumping!! IP: Logged |

Yeh listen I'm sorry about calling you ignorant, I forget that we are on a forum based on helping people. It won't happen again. Anyway, the cat seems to be in a bit of pain when I pick it up. I think it might have some internal injuries, I can't find the owner as yet so if I haven't found him/her by tonight, I will wait for my boyfriend to get home from work and take it to the vet. God, Chief is costing me an absolute fortune in vet bills!! He actually thinks was doing something right!! I still love him though. IP: Logged |

I had a rotty once that tried to attack a limb I had gotten tangled on in a walk through the woods, these dogs often try to help where its not needed!Hey,you should watch that cat for shock,a good bite from a pit can do way more internal damage than external! IP: Logged |

Neek-- that is so sad.. but by luck, the cat is still alive. Maybe it is a stray though. No one can really blame your dog, the cat from what it seems was on your property. Thank goodness Nellie stepped in.. Hurray for Nellie!! Like ignergehl said, "Sometimes it takes a woman to step in!" Angie Saige n Jekkyl... IP: Logged |

Neek, I don't know what your laws are like over there, but here, cats and dogs are both supposed to be kept in their own yards, and if either wanders into someone elses yard and is injured, I don't think the owner of the dog that did the damage can be held responsible. I can see how you would feel guilty for what happened, but here they generally say that paying vet bills for your dog attacking someone elses' generally is the same as admitting the attack was your fault, opening you up to all sorts of legal issues. Again, I don't know if things are the same there, but you might want to check it out, just to be safe. EDIT: nevermind the part about paying vet bills, just reread it, and saw that you hadn't found the owner... glad you're making sure he gets vet care, even though he's not yours! We took the cat to the vet tonight and explained what had happened, they said they would hold the cat overnight and see if it was microchipped so they could contact the owner. In the vet's point of view, the cat needs treatment because of it's obvious pain around the stomach area and if they can't locate the owner then I am liable for the vet bill which they will quote on tomorrow. They will not treat an animal if it is unowned. Yes the law requires all owners of cats to keep them inside at night but I'm not sure about the day time and dogs are supposed to be kept securely in their yard at all times. I don't think this is my fault but I will pay the bill because when I bought chief from the animal pound I was told he was a stray and I feel responsible for him and will do anything to make sure that he is well looked after. I guess the same goes for the cat although if it is a stray I can't adopt it. That will be asking for trouble. The vet will have to find it a home. IP: Logged |

The vet rang back this arvo to say that the cat was microchipped and the owner was located. I don't have to pay for the vet bill. Apparently the owner was horrified when the vet explained what happened. The injures weren't that serious, about two penetrating puncture wounds and some bruising to the ribs and surrounding muscle. Anyway it sounds like the cat will be fine although the vet strongly advised me to get chief desexed (or spayed). I told him I will consider it very seriously. My boyfriend will absolutely refuse to get him altered as he dosen't believe it is necessary. (He wasn't happy when I got Nellie done behind his back) Yeh also, the owner of cat was lectured on how easily a common moggy can turn into a feral cat if it is loose to wander around alone. I thought that was a bit extreme! It looked like a housecat to me, though I'm not a vet, I guess. Anyway just thought I would update you's on whats going on. Cheers! IP: Logged |
