Lucky was a pup when we found him in the woods starving over a year ago. I've been told he looks like pitt bull.
http://www.PictureTrail.com/gid3096511

When we first got him he would fight with every dog that came near us until they ran out of the yard. That eventually stopped and begin to get along with these dogs.

then we moved and now he seems to get along with all the female dogs but attacks the male dogs.

At home with us he is a great dog, good with the kids, food, housebroken. The other problem is that he barkes at people that come to the house (appears to be only men?!) He isn't growling, and is usually wagging his tail but he looks intimidating and people give me some dirty looks or act fearful. I odn't think he would ever attack a person but I'm concered about the attacking another dog. When he does he could accidently hurt one of the kids and hurt someone elses dog.

What should I do, I love the dog but is the behavior acceptable, can i work with him on this, or will we have to give him up?

Yep, it's a pit alright. Darned pretty at that!

It's always best to have oposite sexes since same sex dominance can occur.

It'd probably be a good idea to do obedience training with him. If it bothers you that he barks at people you need to correct this behavior (almost any dog will bark at strangers coming to or entering a house. They are protecting you as well as warning the 'stranger' that they are around.)

But, take obedience classes into consideration. It'd do a world of good.

i'de say he's definately mostly pit, i don't know if he's full blooded or not. the hair on his tail looks like it might be a little long for a pit, it's hard to tell from the pics though. very handsome dog. i agree with the previous post you need to get obedience training, are you planning on getting him fixed? it may help with his dog aggresion. it didn't help with the pit i used to have though.

That was the same with my female, she was aggressive with other females but would roll over like a puppy if there was a male dog around. I think it is just the way they are around same sex dogs.

how often is he around other dogs? even if you get him fixed and go to obedeince classes please never under any circumstances leave him unattended with other dogs. never trust him not to fight. thats a lesson you don't want to learn the hard way

My boyfriend made that mistake by taking our pitbull mix to his mums and he went berserk on her male Lab. Needless to say after he got under our fence to the neighbours rottie was enough for me to know he was a female only dog!

He looks like a pit mix to me, possibly akita x pit bull.... but what do I know Do you have a fence? Thet would be the best way to keep him in and strange dogs out. If not, you'll have to either take him out on leash, or use a tie-out, but ONLY when you're there to supervise, as a tied dog is at a huge disadvantage should they get into a fight. Fixing him may or may not cut down on his territorialism, since he's already mature, but it's still a good idea, and has health benefits as well. There's really no way to "teach" him to leave other dogs alone, as the act of fighting is something instinctual in the APBT (and some APBT mixes), so the best you can do is take steps to keep him and others' pets safe.

He does most definately look like he's mixed with Pit. His hair is a bit too long and he's actually pretty large. Pit bulls tend to grow out, rather than up. Becoming more stout than tall. His behavior isn't uncommon for a male pit bull. I myself have a 1 year old American and he is about as rowdy as you can get. Great dog, great personality. Great with kids, and listens extremely well but is very hyper and tends to take a minute to listen if excited. I understand the barking at people with his tail wagging. I doubt, if he is doing that, he would ever actually attack someone unless they were trying to harm you or your children. Pit bulls are very territorial and like to make it known that you are in THEIR house. They have to make an appearance and even if they aren't aggressive they can still get bad vibes from strangers, considering most people have bad feelings about Pit bulls in the first place. Trick weighs over 70 lbs and plays with my 4 months old kittens, so I really have no fear of him harming an innocent person. People say that they will turn on you but I believe they will only turn if they have a reason. So don't worry about him attacking people because if he does, then he most likely feels like that person is unsafe, and I doubt you would have too many untrustworthy people coming into your home. When someone comes to the door, try telling him to sit at the door, beside you while you open it. Sooner or later, when someone comes over, instead of barking, he'll just sit. It worked for me.
