How old is your dog? If he is still young, 1-3 years, he will act hypo for a while as these dogs use up alot of energy, which brings me to my next question. Does your pit get enough exercise? Pitbulls need at least an hour long walk/run every day or they become bored and destructive. Toys and especially chew bones will exercise his teeth and gums as well. You should also take your pit to obedience lessons so he knows how to behave with people around, although I have never had a desexed male, I suspect that in time he will settle and become more controllable as well. As for the narrow-minded people in your town, ignore them or say something like "Don't knock it unless you've tried it!" Good luck and remember that YOU live with your pit no-one else so tell them to mind their own business! IP: Logged |

the people in your town are all the more reason for you to advocate for the breed through your dog. My male pit is neutered, and I think it does calm them down. I also feel like its the responsible thing to do. There are so many dogs, especially pits that don't have homes that we shouldn't add to the problem, or even leave a chance of adding to the problem. I'd suggest obedience school. And at least an hour of walking/running around a day. Pit bulls need something to do. Be extra diligent with your pit, you don't want to give anyone a real reason to make noise about your dog. My pit had never seen someone smooking a cigerrete before and cowered at a guy who was moving his ciggerette away f/ his mouth toward my dog. The guy actually tried to say my dog was going to attack him because of the way he drew back. Crazy stuff. Jenny IP: Logged |

it's better that you get him neutered, it lowers the risk of him getting prostate cancer. i'm confused as to why the people are saying that he's biting (other people, you, other animals try and be as specific as you can), what is he biting, if they are just watching you and you're dog play then it aint no biggie. and also i'm curious as to what our boys in blue(cops) told you? wahtever you do, if your outside of your yard make sure he's on a leash. he'll be hyper for a while. i don't know how active you are, but you should probably take him for a 1-2 mile jog at least once a day, more if possible. it'll get rid of some of his energy. make sure that you solcialize him good with people of all ages especially little kids. so then you can show all the pit bull haters how friendly your dog is, and then you'll have no worries right? also i forgot to tell you that if he pulls a little excessivly while on the leash you might want to consider a german prong collar. thats what i did for my girl, it works great. good luck [This message has been edited by benny boy (edited 12-04-2003).] IP: Logged |

Ive had several pits of both sexes, altered and not, and all I can say is that most were 'hyper', and that only a few of those calmed down after de-sexing.Sporting pit breeders call it 'an inability to be still' and look at it as a good thing, but it can be a pain in the butt for the pet-pit owner, Honestly, ive seen 14 year old pits that still jumped around so much you could hardly pet them. Its just a component of doggy personality, even the ones that settle down dont really, much... Still, definitely neuter your dog, it wont ake ALL the fire out of him, but it will help prevent him from killing other dogs, and marking, and trying to escape, and as BennyBoy said, getting cancer.
