Just thought I would post this as an FYI for anyone that runs into the same situation my wife and I had with our AmStaff earlier this year:
The first sign of his sickness was drooling...obviously you will know your dog well enought to know that he/she does or doesn't drool. It would occur once or twice a day and became increasingly more noticeable the closer we got to "the bad weekend".
Loss of apetite: He all but stopped eating on Friday evening, and by Saturday wouldn't look at food.
Saturday- the day from Hell!
We had only had our dog about 2 months at this point, and we were still learning about him. Generally happy, he started to look and act depressed- which we attributed to his new surroundings (we were at our Ches. Bay Cottage), and he just layed around all day. We were installing new carpet, so we tied him securely on the proch within easy veiwing distance. The whole day passed and he wouldn't eat or drink, trips to the bathroom were useless- he had nothing to get rid of. We started to worry...
Went for a short dinner and returned to find him throwing up for the 6th time on our new carpet.
We decided it would be best to cut the weekend short (Sunday now) and head home for comfort- thinking the worst was over.
Called the Vet when we got home- thankfully he checked his messages and got right back to us: he gave us some general advice and said we should come in Monday morning at 9.
Monday morning at 8:45 we were in the parking lot.
They gave him a checkout including eyes, ears, throat, stool sample, and a couple X-rays. They kept him for the day and put him on IV. The called later in the day to say that they couldn't find anything and he was just de-hydrated.
Took him home- he was a little better, and tired.
Threw up one more time during the night, and we were obviously worried again. (Tuesday) Called Vet-they asked us to give him some antibiotics (they gave them to us) and be patient.
Another horrible night passed...he started to run into things when he walked- and slanted on the leash- odd.
Wednesday came home from lunch to check on him...found him shaking uncontrollably in his crate.
Four way hazard lights and about 85mph straight back in to the Vet.
They took him IMMID. and began to give him drugs, said they would watch him, and it was likely blockage.
Ran a barium test on him, and he did indeed have blockage in his lower intestinal tract.
Options: Surgery: $1200
Put him to sleep.

HMMM? I pretended I didn't hear her say put him to sleep, and said cut him open and save his life!

2 days later, 11 stitches, $1200 dollars, and a small lump of clay later, and our Russ was on the mend.

Today- Russ is one of the happiest, most spoiled dogs in the Northeast.

Please, PLEASE don't hesitate to go back to your Vet when problems pop up...they said if I wouldn't have come from lunch- he would have died that afternoon. The chemicals in his stomach were backing up, and effecting his brain functions.

We have an EXCELLENT vet- he is a nationally recognized expert on Lab's, and generally a damn good vet...if this can happen to them, it could happen to anyone.

Get pet insurance, and get to know your pet, it could save his/her life someday!
