Well we decided it was time for another pitbull, i have'nt had one in 15 years and i know it's time for another.
The thing is, i already own 2 terrier breed's, a Toy Fox Terrier and A West Highland White Terrier. The TFT is 7 yrs old and the WHW is 4 yrs old.
both are spayed Females and have been around both dog's and puppies with no problems.
I also own 2 cat's...
I know the stubborness in Terrier breed's and how high strung they can be.
My hubby is a trucker and he want's the pit to go with him when he's by himself, The other two terriers are not allowed to go they don't like it and besides that they are my girls...lol
I told my hubby the pit will have to have shared custody...lol I want the puppy to get used to the sounds of the truck and when it stops, she will know it's time to go potty, BUT i also want her to get used to the other dog's and cat's here so they will all get along good when hubby comes home over the weekends and sometimes during the work week. Is there any way i can do this so they all get along as the pit grows older? I'm not worried about the 2 i have living at home as they never ever fight. they all know i am the dominent one in the household! The puppy is not even born yet so i have time to get as much research as i can about bringing home a puppy with already dog's in the household. I plan on getting the puppy when she is at least 8 weeks old.
Thanks if you can help me

I would get a he not a she. I would have the dog altered at 3-4 months old. I would enroll the dog in obedience class at 4 months old.

Socialize it a lot BUT remember that no matter how you raise it it may turn on and eat fii and fido and kit and kat. So be careful learn how to rea your new dog and just be prepared.

I have had male dog's, and i will never own another one...
This pitbull that im going to get is not big, both parents are around 20-30 lbs, My two terriers i have now are 15 lbs, so really there is not going to be that much of a size difference.
Also i do plan on spaying, and also get obedience lessons from puppy classes to up.
I was just wondering about how i should go about haveing the puppy both in a semi truck and at home? should she stay home till she's well adjusted to the home or should she do both?
Should i get her younger then 8 weeks old (around 5 weeks or when she is just weened?) so she thinks my other two terriers are her mom?
Thanks

The advice desertAPBT gave you about getting a male was good.

Most APBTs develop some level of dog aggression as they mature, and some don't get along with any dogs at all, let alone dogs of the same sex.

Since you already have two female dogs, you would be taking a huge gamble by adding another female to the mix, even if she will be spayed. A male APBT has a much better chance of "fitting in" with your other two dogs.

http://www.badrap.org has a great section where they discuss multiple dog households and same-sex aggression.
If you decide that you can't possibly own a male APBT, you may want to reconsider adding an APBT to your family. If you *must* have a female, please realize that your chances of all three dogs getting along with each other are slim, and you may have to cordon off your household for the safety of your two smaller terriers. Even if the APBT is only 30lbs as an adult, she could still do some serious damage to any dog, large or small.

And NO, please get her at 8 weeks--she needs to spend time with her litter mates and her mom for a bit longer. Getting her at 5 wks will not make her think that either of your females is her mom.

And your point is what? I have a 38 -40 pound girl and I tell you she could and would love to whoop up a 80 pound dog. You are undersetimating this breed. I read a story where a 40 pound APBT whopped the hell out of a 100+ pound Akita. Size makes no difference. They are powerhouses.

Also i do plan on spaying, and also get obedience lessons from puppy classes to up.

Even so you are taking a BIG chance with same sex dogs.

If she were to stay home for the amount of time I would feel comfortable leaving for days and coming back she would not go at all. You never know when your husband will walk in the house woith her and she will go after fii and gigi.

NO and if the breeder would let you take her that early I would not buy from them becuase they dont care about the pups.

My suggestion is not to get a APBT youa re asking for trouble. Trust me! I have a dog that was cute cuddly and raised very well and given love, raised in the house around other dogs etc. Well those days are over. He does not like female dogs PERIOD and if a male dog looks the wrong way at her she will be scratching to get to him. We learned this the hard way. With a GSD we were fostering they would play all the time and one day he went after her and that was it she hated him. He was about 70 pounds and she was on it! Luckly we were there as we never leave the dogs together when we are not. If he had not been there it would not have been pretty.

But hey they are your dogs and cats not mine.

You DO realize that three dogs is a whole 'nother ballgame when compared to two dogs, right?
Two dogs who have been best buddies for life can quickly become mortal enemies when a new dog is introduced to the family. If one gets into a little scrap with the new pup, will the other join in? Then you'd have a three-dog fight to break up.

That means the pit bull you're planning on getting will likely be 1 1/2 -2 times as big as your current dogs. And given the APBT's fighting ability, IF one of your other dogs ever ends up in a fight with the APBT, they'll likely end up dead.

While these things are good, they are NOT a guarantee that the pup will get along with other dogs when they are mature. All of our dogs KNOW that we humans are in charge of all that exists in this house, but they still get into the occasional scrap. The problem with a scrap involving an APBT and a smaller dog is that it could be over VERY quickly, with a tragic end for the smaller dog. Obedience is also a good tool for control, but can never overcome genetics.

If you're set on getting a female, then you need to be prepared for the fact that it may not get along with the others once it matures. You also need to know how to properly break up a dog fight between a pit bull and a dog of another breed, in case they do end up in a fight. NEVER leave the APBT alone with one of the other dogs, if a fight does occur, there will be no one to break it up, and you'll probably end up coming home to find at least one of them dead or dying.

I am a stay at home house wife/mom.
The TFT i got her as a puppy at the age of 6 weeks, and that was 7 yrs ago.
The westie, i got her 2 years ago, and estimated her age, she was a rescue.

I Just lost a Rottie about 3 months ago, I had him a short time, i got him a year ago and he developed cancer at 9 months old and spread rapidly.

So i have had 3 dog's in the family and all were great. The two terriers would put the Rottie in his place and he respected them, Yes he would think he was the boss, but they told him different and i have always been there to supervise what goes on, My dog's have never been alone.

My first pit was small around 25 lbs, she was my baby and loved everything and everyone (from cat's to other breed dogs) maybe i hit it Lucky with her. She was 13 when she passed on, and i never ever had a problem. People could'nt belive she was the same breed everyone talked about being a killer (this was in the 80's when i had her)
Maybe i'm just praying i can find another just like her. Maybe a small male would be better, I just don't like the way the Males look, All the ones i have seen have the blocky head, i don't want that. The females i have seen look feminen and don't have quit the blocky head as the male's do and they are smaller.
I am still just looking and not jumping into anything right now.

luvindogsmom- I admire you coming to this website looking for information and advice before you decide on another dog, another pitbull in particular. There is a wealth of information and knowledgable people coming to these boards who have excellent advice to offer (for the most part). Take time with this decision and keep thinking this through and above all, listen carefully to what Goob, desertABPT, and rgyoung777 are saying especially, they seem to offer very good, sound advice particulary about this breed, who are trying to better educate people (like myself)while offering their experience and advice to people who care enough to come to this site asking questions (like you). I have come to learn and respect a great deal about responsible pitbull ownership through these boards, and while the occassionally nutball slips through, for the most part the people on this board cares and shares things about this breed that will hopefully get it's repuation back in good standing, but this will only happen through educating and protecting these dogs from being in the wrong hands, and the wrong situations. I am not referring to you here, in particular- you have experience with the breed and I am sure you want to provide a loving home- I'm saying this because of the circumstances you have that possibly this breed may not be a good choice, possibly. Ultimately, this is your decision. Just take your time thinking this through and take the advice given here very seriously. Good luck.
