Hello Everyone: Iam posting here becuase my vet was no help. My Pit/staff has 2 problems. One started about a year back. He has on both creses of his mouth (where it is always damp usually and the upper flap hangs covering the lower flap) what can only be described as rotting skin. It really never gets worse but nevr dries out. It is always wet. I clean it daily chlorhexiderm a blue cleaning liquid given by the vet. I also add a little neosporin. It doesnt help. The spot is always accumulating blood on the sides that dries up and falls off when cleaned. The other problem developed very recently. Usually in the morning for a few hours he will start shaking uncontrollably. Just shaking and breathing hard as if he is hot. Can anyone tell me what i should do. The vet says there is nothing wrong with him. Most of the time he is happy except when he is hsacking and breathing hard. He is 5 years old and has all his shots. Vets are clueless. I haven't ever heard of anyone using the Chlorhexiderm (sp?) solution for anything other than cleaning ears.. Anyhow.. I really have no clue what is going on and I am hoping someone else on here with more knowledge than myself has some ideas of what is going on.. my recommendation to you and I would honestly do this.. Get another vets opinion.. go to another vet and get an opinion because this is not right at all. There is definately somethign wrong with your dog and it needs medical attention. From the sounds of it.. it needs it ASAP. Is it possible seizures?? Do the marks on the dogs mouth look like bite marks from the seizures possibly?? I do not know.. anyhow.. see another vet.. it could mean your dogs life.. Angie IP: Logged |

Nope he doesnt have seizures. He is actually in prestine health other then the obvious. Very friendly and extremely jealous dog. Sometime even looks like he immitates things (hard to explain). His name is Tyson. He was never a fighting dog but was in quite a few brawls. Neighbors hate him becuase he is mean to all the other dogs except other pits or the neighbors female doberman. He loves all people and the neighbors kids have no problems playing with him in the yard. He will gladly take pulls on the ear/tail. But he just doesnt get along with other dogs. I am taking him to the vet later today. He also has a tendency to eat rubber blue handballs he finds and dirty tissues. Thanks IP: Logged |

I actually have two pitties who both have this shaking. I found that the shaking occurs in the morning or early evening before they have had time to play. Since they are very active dogs their bodies are ready to play.I noticed yours is on a chain. This increases his anxiety.Have you ever been so anxious to do something and had to wait? You start getting antsy. Thais is exactly what the dogs are doing.Dogs pant when they are anxious as well as when they are hot. This is most likely what is going on.As for the mouth problem, my male pit has a problem similar to this.He never bleeds but it is always damp. I usually try to wipe his mouth after he drinks to keep it dry. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I dont think this shaking is from anxiety although he does shake all the time. I heard many pits shake this is normal. But in this case this is a little beyond just shaking. He wont eat, drink, play or do anyhting normally. It isnt even hot. I took him tot he vet and had him checked for the usuall. He game me some kind of antibiotics for the lips. He says that the dog may bee scared of the wind. It has been extremely windoy now that i think about during all the times he has been shaking. I dont know though. A little strange for a pit to be terrified of the wind and not be a little scared to jump fences 4 feet high. I think pits are the greatest dogs. I ve seen all kinds of dogs and had many different types. I would have to say that pitts and staffs are umong some of the smartest and most "sensetive" dogs on earth. Plus they are so qute IP: Logged |

Hi, I'd be inclined to seek a second opinion. Check around and see if there is a DVM specializing in skin disorders. IP: Logged |

ynot, my lab 6 1/2 year old lab has just developed what sounds like the same thing thing with the lips. about 2 months ago he started getting bad breath and and I couldnt figure out what was wrong, then about a month ago when he came up to me he smeared black stuff all over me, I noticed his bottom lip, in the crevice (folds) was filled with this black stuff and was bleeding. I thought he had cut himself on a can he had gotten a hold of. I took him to the vet and he said its just "old dogs disease" and said to clean it with hydrogen peroxide and apply neosporine, well this helped for a few days but I am back to the same problem, I clean it out every day! I am with you, am ready to go to another vet, this does not seem right. I have searched the web for this problem to no avail. I posted this problem on the regular dog message board but no-one could help. Please let me know if you find out anything different. Honeybear IP: Logged |

Honeybear: I did take him to a vet again. This time he said that it was gingivitis?? I think he is crazy but hey its worth a shot. He gave me the same liquid i ve been using Chlorhexiderm. It is a blue liquid that basically cleans the "wound". The vet also gave me antibiotics to feed him twice a day. What i do instead is feed him once a day. In the evening i break the capsule and disolve the contents in a little bit of water and put it on his lips. This was a recomendation of my mom who was once a lpn. As far as the shaking the doc said he is scared of the wind. Hoep this helps IP: Logged |

Ynot, the gingvitas does not sound right to me either. We are talking about the stuff being in the folds of their skin on their mouths. I first thought he had an infected tooth, and checked his gums and teeth, but couldnt find anything. he has good gums and teeth. Also making the problem worse is he has an overbite and his fang sits in this fold irriating it more. Please let me know how he does on the anibiotics. I want to see if this would help Jake. And your pup is adorable! I need to get a dig camera. IP: Logged |

Honeybear: I think its working a bit. It doesnt "soil" and bleed as much as it use to now that i feed him antibiotics and clean it atleast once a day. I put antibiotics directly on the wound as well. Basically empty the capsule and disolve the powder in a bit of water. Seems to be doing a tad better but i guess time will tell. He is not a pup by the way fully grwon 5 year old pit or staff. Not sure he looks like a pit but has all the temprement and qualities of a staff. IP: Logged |

Hi - I happened upon your message and my dog had the same problem - the vet said it's from plastic food dishes - I switched to ceramic and the problem went away -- are you using plastic water/food bowls? I had a Newfoundland mix and he got it every time I used a plastic bowl. Let me know, I'm curious to see if this could be the problem! Good luck! IP: Logged |
