Hello everyone. I just joined the group and I had a question. First off, we have a stafordshire terrier that is a little over a year old. She is an absolute sweetheart and it's ridiculous the reaction she sometimes gets when people figure out she's part pit. People who just finnished petting her will suddenly decide "ooh, she's a pit!" and be instantly apprehensive, it's amazing.
Anyway, back to my question. When she's out of her crate in the house, she wants constant attention. She's not a "pet me" dog, but she doesn't like you to be concerning yourself with anything but her. If I happen do be doing something else, she will frequently go down stairs and pee a little on the rug and come back. It's not that she had to go out, but I ignored her and she couldn't wait. It seems to be more out of spite that she didn't have my undivided attention. Can anyone explain to me if there is a reason she might be doing this, and if there's anything I can do to correct that behavior?
Thanks

Immediately after she comes out of her crate, take her outside and DO NOT let her go in until she goes to the bathroom. Then when she does pee on the floor.. punish her. What about keeping toys close by so that when you are doing something you can try giving her a toy. Kongs and Hercules works wonders for when you are busy or gone.. put a little peanut butter and something inside and you are good to go. So then when you are busy and cannot pay attention to her, you can give her one of those. However, I am not going to put this on you or anything but many dogs will do that for attention. They look at it like discipline is even a form of attention even if it is not good attention. You ought to take a little more time trying to spend with your dog, walks, playtime or just sitting together cuddling or brushing the dog. Anything that is attention, then she won't feel so raped of it. Just a few suggestions..

Thank you for your suggestions, I'll deffinitely take them into account. Her cong and rawhide bones do keep her busy, but not for very long before she finnishes them. Depending on her mood she likes her stuffed animals too. With that stuff, how often is it appropriate to give her the cong with peanutbutter or the bones? I don't do it too oftern becuase I don't want to be giving her too many food treats. I don't know if they're good for her and I don't want her to get heavy.
I'm guessing the same suggestions go for other things she might get into? For example, she seems to have a real fondness for wallets (which is wonderful), especially when she doesn't think you're watching. Thanks again. I will try giving her some more attention also. Maybe that's all it is, a cry for attention. Anyway, I appreciate the help

Eny-- Well, as far as the wallets go.. lol.. you can always take your man's and go on an all out shopping spree and say, "Whoops!! Must have been the dog!!" LOL.. It is so hard to break them of habits as any dogs.. It is very stressful as well, but be strong. Don't let the dog get the best of you because once she sees that she gets away with something, she wil keep at it and push harder next time. They like to test to see what they can and cannot get away with. As far as Kong's.. just try using different things in them. Or somethign sugarless/fat free (Don't know how well they';d like that but try just the same) Trying diffferent things will keep her interest peaked.. My dogs love stuffed teddies as well. They love ropes and those huge rawhide bones, things like that. It is their quiet time things, (Iwish they knew that..lol) Good luck and keep us posted..

Punishing a dog for peeing on the floor will result in a dog who finding a "secret place" to pee, where you won't see them doing it, and will have the unpleasant experience of finding later. Instead, clean it up with as little show as possible, and thouroughly clean the area with something like "Nature's Miracle" to get rid of any remnants of the urine.

Have you had her checked out and had bloodwork done by a vet? When our newer pit bull started peeing little puddles on the floor at her previous home, her owner had no idea why she was doing it. After the dog also lost a huge amount of weight, she took her to the vets, where a blood panel confirmed that she had diabetes. The fact that she went for so long without diagnoses will predispose her to a lot of complications as she ages, when they could likely have been avoided completely had she been to the vets sooner. It could be something as simple as a bladder infection or UTI causing this, but if left untreated, these minor problems can become serious.

In the meantime, try to prevent her from going again by keeping an eye on her whenever she's loose. If you're doing something and can't pay as much attention, tether her to your waist so she can't wander off and pee. If you're doing something that doesn't allow that, put her in her crate. You might also try a food/water/potty schedule to try and get her settled into a routine.

On the subject of Kongs/chewies, if you give her a peanut butter filled kong, give her a little less food that night/morning. Same with the chewies. You could also put some of her daily food rations in the kong, layering food/PB/food/PB, in that manner. Again, subtract that portion from her normal feeding. You could also try some "free" foods, foods that won't cause weight gain because they're not broken down by dogs' systems or they don't have much fat. Things like raw green beans, carrots, apples (cores may be poisonous though, I'm not sure), etc are good for this.
