Hey there,

i have a question that hopefully can be answered, it's sort of an odd question
i think but anyway... i recently got a pitbull pup .. she's about 1-2 months old...
i have three other dogs a rotwieller and two black labs, anyway when Josey ( my pit) is near Zillah (my Rot) she constantly licks his mouth until my rot gets fed up and either starts growling or will nip her.. when i see this happening i tell her no and try clapping my hands but unless Zillah does something about it she will continue on sometimes i have to literally pull her away from Zillah's mouth-it's beginning to get annoying for both Zillah and myself.... i dunno if anyone has experienced this before ... i've never had this problem with a dog before and Josey doesn't do this with my other two dogs. i just would like to know if i just have a silly pup..or there's something that maybe i can do to break her of this...any responses would be much appreciated...

Well, My dog will lick at another dogs spot if there is something wrong. His mom had a wound on her leg and my guy would go up and lick at it. Dog's lick to heal as the saliva contains enzymes that help a wound heal faster. When I'm cut, thats the first thing he does is TRY to lick it (I ain that crazy, he aint licking an open wound on my body).

I don't know if there is something wrong with your older girls mouth, but I would look into it.

It is very possible I am wrong. This might be a behavioral issue, but doubt it since this is the only dog your pit does this to?

Goob is very educated on this, goob what do you think?

Princess is this something you've seen before?

My rotty does this to my older dog. But not the mouth she constantly licks her ears to the point that if I go to touch my olders dog head it is soaking wet. If its not a medical prob with your rotty than it could just be the pup kinda being anoyying. My rotty licks my older girls ears until Oreo get fet up and snaps or growls at her. The pup will learn. Your rotty will put her paw down so to speak and let the pup no where it stands. But there are other people on this forum that know pit bull specifics so they should be along to help you out farther.

It's supposed to be a submissive thing, but I think some dogs realize that it's a good way to get a drink, and kind of "abuse" the other dog. Annie (second in command to Goo right now, and a pretty dominant little dog) will run up to the other dogs and stick her whole head in there, lapping up (sorry, this is kinda sick) the spit from the corners of their mouths. She does it more often on hot days, or right after we've been outside playing, so I think she may actually be trying to get a drink, rather than submitting to them. Since your dog is a pup, it's most likely a submissive thing, enjoy it while it lasts, because you may have problems when she gets older and decides she doesn't want to be "second best" anymore

maybe you're on to something there now to think of it ... my Rot is about 180 pounds he's huge and has the "i'm king of everything" complex.. i notice that when zillah is lying down josey will try to snuggle to him and he sorta gives her a go away type of growl and then she starts licking his mouth sometimes it scares my mom and i because her whole head is in his mouth and it looks like he's about to swallow her or something .. but my pup is so determined it doesn't seem to phase her that he's 10 times bigger then her...

It is a submissive action. Pups will do it alot. The Alpha will usually growl because it is very annoying LOL. Then the pup usually rolls over. When I used to take my dogs to the dog park, Thor used to get this alot from all the younger dogs. It pissed him off and he would tell them to get lost haha.
