I need some advice. I know this is a somewhat common but sad thing but I just went down to my local humane society yesterday. And half of the dogs there are pitbulls. Is there anything I can do to even save a few. I cant take any more dogs into my home right now so that isnt even an option unfortunately. I even saw that someone posted an ad up on petfinders the other day about the over abundance of pit bulls there. So I know its not me not that I thought that in the first place but there is obviously someone else that is worried about them too. The shelters around here dont have a high kill rate but I am sure that there are many pitbulls being put down just cuz there are so many of them. I just wondered if there is anything I could do. If you have any suggestions let me know. Thanks IP: Logged |

Yes, what you can do is look up your closest APBT breeder in PA call them and ask why they are continuing to breed when the pound there is over full on un wanted pit bulls. You can call them and ask why they don't try to save and rehabilitate the dogs they are pumping into the system. And if they love the breed soooooo much why are they creating more when they know how irresponsible MOST dog owners are. Thank-you for your support. I can't bring myself to go down to the pound cause I know I'd be coming home with them allllll....I just can't afford that and my dog would loose it. I will email you directly with a link to all the breeders in the USA..these people really piss me off....just sit back and listen to their jerky ways. Cheers IP: Logged |

Thank you pitbull princess. I know you breed pit bulls but you also breed them responsibly and they are your babies forever not just until they leave your home. I hate to say this but I really dont know much about pit bulls. Who makes good owners and so on. I love them and know they usually have alot of energy and that they get bad raps due to ignorant owners who just dont care. But could some of you give me info about pit bulls I would really like to learn more so maybe i can send letters out and educate people about these beautiful dogs. I have never owned one and only know a few people that own one and you guys who I have learned alot about them just from reading your posts but could you tell me more and basics I dont even know their history or some links that would help. Thank you IP: Logged |

From what I have read so far it seems like PBTs and rotties have similar characteristics and the owners are similar. They need lots of exercise, could go on forever, aim to please the master but can be stubborn, good with children, can be good guard dogs. Wow, I am learning so much. I am excited. I am haveing some trouble finding really informative links about them in general. Got any good ones? Thank you so much for your info everyone. IP: Logged |

Rottymommy, pit bulls (in general) DON'T make good guard dogs (not trying to pick a fight here, just pointing it out ). Most are incredibly friendly towards everyone, so much so that they would allow someone to walk right in the house and help themselves, or even get into a car with a complete stranger (pit bulls are one of the breeds most commonly stolen, which is a huge reason for never leaving one outside unattended). Some will defend their owners from a serious and real threat, but they should not be wary of or act aggressively towards strangers. There are tons of ways that you can help the dogs in the shelter without actually adopting one. Most rescues/shelters are always in need of foster homes (not sure this would be an option for you, either), both long-term and short-term. If a dog needs to get to it's new home (sometimes these homes are several states away), they'll need transportation, and one of the more common ways of doing so is for people to divide the trips into "legs" and have volunteers take the dogs for part of the trip. If you have any training experience, you could help train some of the dogs, thus making them more adoptable. Pit bulls are high energy dogs, and have a hard time with "kennel life". Exercise is great, even if you only pick one dog and walk it once a week, that dog will appreciate it, and it will be good for both his (her) mental and physical health. If the dogs are allowed to have toys, you can try to find some 'tough" toys that they'll be able to play with (kongs, rhino bones, etc, you can even "make" toys, old bowling balls are great for some dogs, or blankets/pants/shirts cut up and tied to make tug toys (not to be left with the dog alone)). If your shelter does "adoption days" at petstores, etc then you could volunteer to help out there, if they don't, start bugging them about it . If the dogs aren't allowed access to a fenced area, then maybe see if the shelter would be able to use some of those cable "runs" (the things where a line runs between two trees/poles, and another line hangs off of that & connects to the dog's collar, sliding along the first line) so the dogs can get some exercise. For owner education, there are a couple sites that provide informational packets/sheets/pamphlets that you could maybe print and give to the shelter to give to potential adopters. You could also try to beg/plead/convice local trainers to offer discount basic obedience classes for adopted pit bulls (or all adopted dogs). Or local vets/shelters to offer discount spay/neuter (if you cut of the dog supply at the source, there will be less in shelters ). You could also put some information sheets in local petstores, etc where clueless owners may pick them up. As for sites/links, here are some that may help you out a little... A pit bull breeder in PA (not sure where), she is a responsible breeder, and also takes in some rescues. She may be able to direct you to someone close to your area. http://hartagold.com/ Pit Bull Rescue Central. http://www.pbrc.net Pit bulls on the web (make sure you check out the "pet pit bull" part). http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/ Diane Jessups informational pit bull site(make sure you check the "sheltering/BSL" page). http://www.workingpitbull.com/ American Dog Owners' Association. http://adoa.org/ BADRAP. http://www.badrap.org/rescue/ Spindletop pit bull & amstaff rescue (this is their links page, but they have some stuff on the other pages too). http://www.spindletoppitbullrefuge.org/links.html [This message has been edited by goob (edited 03-26-2003).] IP: Logged |

Pit Princess, it bothers me to hear you purposely bring these guys into the world, but not really because I know you are a responsible breeder. It bothers me because who knows if the female you give away doesn't get spayed or maybe a male hops a fence and impregnates the dog next door..thus un wanted puppies and away to the pound they go OR away to any home, not necessarily a good home. But I don't really know...all I know is I love this breed and wish people would stop breeding them for profit. I hope you are not offended by my post...it just brakes my heart to see how many suffer. Hi Rottymommy, there are tons of links...Russ is working on a site...its under construction right now, but we are so happy to be putting this together. I'm helping with the info check out these links...lots to learn and many have different opinions on things, but one thing is for sure and that is this breed is very unique and completley miss understood. Cheers This last one is Russ's...still being worked on..so if anyones got suggestions please feel free to email me! IP: Logged |

Thanks for all the info and links everyone. Goov I am sorry if I misunderstood it just said they can be good watch dogs but like you said I havent seen any that didnt like anything more than to run up to you and lick you to death. I am involved in fostering dogs but they only foster out puppies that need weaned or are too young and pregnant moms. I am also involved in transporting but need someone to give them a forever home first. I will definitely check into some of your other suggestions and all the links. Luckily there is a east shore and west shore shelter about 20 min away from each other so I just noticed that most of them that were running out of time were transferred to the west shore shelter. Good news for most of them for now anyhow. i will definitely start learning all I can about PBT and seeing what I can do to help them in my area. I am always eager to learn more. I already know that petsmart gives discount training courses to rescued dogs and I will see what I can find out about spay/neuter discounts. i know some that deal with dogs with that but I am trying to get people to do more. Unfortunately our shelter doesnt spay/neuter the animals before they go out unless they were already altered before they came in. I am also going to go down and become a guardian angel to some who need some extra incentive of getting a home. Its just a deposit put down to help pay for the animal to be there and then goes towards the adopter as a discount.I will keep you posted and thank you so much for all your insight. All of you are great. IP: Logged |

Shmoopie, If it makes you feel better.I make sure that all my foster dogs are spayed/neutered before leaving my home.I also just drop by unexpected and do home checks.I do not just give away these dogs and that be the end of it.I have a list of every dog I have sold or gave away.I keep in contact with all of them.As the list grows,so does my phone bill and the miles on my truck...lol..What I do is for life not just until they leave my house.I have make a life time commitment. Your statement did not offend me.Everone is intitled to their own opinion.Over the last 2 years I have cut my breeding in half. IP: Logged |

I do my very best by these dogs...Alot of people disagree with the way I raise them. They think they are just dogs and should be treated that way.My dogs are more than just dogs. They are like children and thats how I treat them.I do the same things with them as I do my own kids. IP: Logged |
