Hey Tybrax,

You are living in Australia?

When I was there for the 2000 Olympics I did some travelling and noted the majority of dogs were Pit Bulls.....I very often saw 6 year old kids walking the 65lb Pit with chains on, down the beach...and thats no joke. I noticed because at that time I had just gotten Duke and was amazed that Australia had soooooo many pittys. What amazed me more was that they didn't seem feared at all. When we stayed at a little house on the beach there was a gentleman down the road who's female Pitt had just delivered a litter...both dogs were very friendly.....I had no idea Australia didn't like the breed cause from what I saw almost everyone owned one!

HI THERE , I LIVE ON THE GOLD COAST , I HOPE YOU CHECKED IT OUT , YES YOU ARE RIGHT THERE ARE ALOT OF PITTY HERE , THEY LOVE THE BEACH,
BUT THEY ARE BANNED FROM BEACHES NOW, WHAT CAN I SAY THERE HAS BEEN OVER 8,000 DOGS ALL OVER QLD THAT HAVE BEEN INNOCENTLY SLAUGHTERED BY COUNCIL;S, FAMILIES HAVE BEEN FRIGHTENED TO KEEP THEM , OR THEY THINK IT LOOKS LIKE A PITTY, IT MIGHT BE A PITTY,
OR , IF THEY DON;T HAVE PAPERS FOR THERE DOG ITS
AUTOMATICALLY CLASSED AS PITBULL, QLD IS RATED AS THE HIGHEST STATE FOR THIS CRUELTY.

SO WE HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING THESE PARASITES
FOR THE SHAKE OF OUR BEAUTIFUL PETS. WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MOVE TO ANY SHIRE IN QLD WITH OUR PETS, WE ARE TREATED LIKE CRIMINALS,
AND THAT JUST DISGUSTING.ANYWAY I HOPE YOU ENJOYED YOUR TRIP HERE , DID YOU CHECK THE BABES OUT ON THE BEACH . TYBRAX

Here's an article that was published in an Australian paper a few months ago... gives you a pretty good idea of how some people feel about the breed.

December 11, 2002 www.heraldsun.com.au

Mmm... pit bull for dinner

Moves to phase out ownership of pit bulls are not happening fast enough

SARAH HENDERSON

Fancy some pit bull pie? Or perhaps a slice of terrier terrine?

The thought of chomping into the cooked flesh of an american pit bull terrier may turn your stomach, but the Koreans haven’t got it all wrong.

Killing the pit bull for human consumption is far preferable to keeping them as pets

American pit bull terriers are a menace and should not be kept in any back yard in this state, let alone be allowed to walk through our parks and streets.

The fact is, these vile animals are genetically programmed to kill.

And no amount of bleating from owners who make claims such as, “But little Hannibal is so cute and adorable that he wouldn’t harm a flea”, changes a thing.

The american pit bull is deadly. Once that instinct to kill is triggered- weather it be by a small child or a fluffy white dog- the creature becomes a raging monster.

And at least one council in Victoria has recognised that brutal fact.

In the municipality of Hobsons Bay- which includes areas such as Williamstown, Altona and Laverton- it is no longer possible to register a new american pit bull terrier.

Only pit bulls which are now registered are permitted, which means that, over time, pit bull ownership in this part of Melbourne will be phased out.

Recent amendments to the Victorian Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act giver all councils the power to phase out this dangerous breed of dog.

So why haven’t more councils acted?

The new laws are now in place, so there are simply no more excuses.

The new legislation automatically deems pit bulls to be dangerous dogs, wether or not they have a history of aggressive behaviour.

There are now much tougher rules on how dangerous dogs must be enclosed. Pit bull owners face fines of up to $12,000 if their animals attack.

But there are still holes in the regulations.

According to the RSPCA president Hugh Wirth, moves to forcibly de-sex all pit bulls in Victoria- rejected by the State Opposition- were a retrograde step.

And the legislation does not cover crossbreeds, which can be dangerous.

There are also problems at a federal level. While the importation of the american pit bull into Australia is banned- along with that of several other exotic and fierce breeds- not enough is being done to police the prohibition laws.

Dr. Wirth says some pit bull owners have managed to escape the import prohibitions by making false declarations s to the breed of dog being imported.

And he claims the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service is failing to adequately investigate such declarations.

And what about the owners themselves?

What type of person would want to keep an animal which has only one purpose in life- to attack and kill?

In my view, the typical pit bull owner enjoys the fear that their “pet” evokes in others.

I am sure there are a few decent pit bull owners out there, but I am afraid I haven’t seen any.

And what’s with those “mini-me” collars- the ones that are covered in silver spikes and worn around the neck of both master and dog?

Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, does it?

So, if you are not living in the municipality of Hobsons Bay and want to be assured that you and your children can walk the streets and play in the park in relative safety, then start petitioning your local council.

Otherwise, maybe the solution is to rely on the culinary traditions of the South Koreans.

Yum, yum.

I ran across the message board while surfing for dog pics and such. I am with you on the pitt thing. ( sounds like a body odor thing lol) They have gotten a bad rep. I have a half pitt, and half who knows( mother was a full blood red nose little spit fire) and recently aquired a really wonderful not too old female pitt with a sweet white face........she is great........we have not been able to find her owners try though we may. She is fitting in really well round here in our 8 kid....3, now 4 dog family. I really am hoping she is with us permantly. She was all watery eyed when she found us so we call her Misty( I know silly) . She could not be more than a year or year and half. Her teeth are really white and gums look good and pink. She is sleeping on my couch as we speak........she has really taken my heart. called the vet bout her eyes he said probably allergies and just to give her a bit of benadryl. I guess I just wanted to talk to folks who know that pitts are not monsters. Like any dog or human they are houw they are raised and treated. Who is this Sarah creature who wrote this stupid article and if we are looking at genetics .......well then she would be genetically ( spelling ) stupid? Well Sarah I am surrounded by pitt owners here in my little corner of Oklahoma and I think you better not come round my hood. Any wwhooo just wanted to post and maybe read about other pitt owners........and we were talking and did just realize that petey in the little rascals was a pitt. I found that so interesting and cool.

Petey was also an AmStaff. He was among the first dogs to be registered as a "Staffordshire Terrier" with the AKC (they later changed the breed's name to American Staffordshire Terrier after they also accepted the English "version" of the breed as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier), making him a dual registered APBT/AST. "Petey" was also in the "Our Gang" series, and I think he was "Tige" on Buster Brown for a while too. APBTs were very popular from the beginning of the 20th century, all the way up through the WWI era. If you look at some of the old military ads from those times, you'll see that quite a few have APBTs in them, as the breed exemplified everything the US wanted to be... courageous, strong, loyal, etc. It wasn't until "humane" organizations started trying to "save" the bull breeds by obliterating them, and caught the media's eye doing so, that the breeds started having problems like those they face today.

Goobs right. Bullies were highly loved until recent times. They were used in many T.V. programs and was actually used by the US as a symbol of pride and intelligence.

I have a list in this magazine I just got and it is endless with how many TV programs used the Bully breed.

I'll get back to you on that..I couldn't believe how mnay famous people and movies/tv shows used them
