I had two Degus a while ago. Degus, for those of you that do not know, are a cross between a gerbil and a chinchilla from south america. They kinda look like big eared chipmunks. They are very social.

Well, they were brothers and over five years old. I knew their time was near and one passed away. That is not the only problem because now the other one has changed its attitude totally. He was never the one to be handled much but now I can't even pick him up he is so scared. There are times when he does circles in his cage and runs in and out of his logs. It seems like he is looking for his brother but can not find him. I am not sure what I can do for him. Getting another Degu seems like the obvious option but the fact is, even the brothers used to fight and a non family member would prolly kill each other. Any suggestions?

I think you need to do something for him as soon as possible. It sounds like he is having seperation anxiety. An alternative to the obvious suggestion of getting him another friend, would be perhaps getting him another friend but getting his new friend his own home, right next to your old one. This might give him someone he can see and communicate with, yet the seperation of habitats wouldn't allow any injury to occur. Perhaps they could even have supervised play time or something of the sort. Just a suggestion.
