Hello everyone. I just wanted to take a moment and say hi. I have a pet gerbil and his name is Butter. My wife and I are already growing attached to him. He seems to be agouti colored with the brown eyes. Well anyway, I hope to make some friends here and at the same time learn more about small animals.

Hi There, I just got two gerbils for my first gerbil owning experience. I've been searching for information on them and this is my first time on the board. I have 2 male gerbils, one black and one white. The black one is sweet and shy, and the white one is very mean and unfriendly. I've been bitten by him 6 times in the past 3 days, I first thought I must be doing something wrong but he actually comes at me and attacks. It's very disturbing. If anyone has any info on this behavior or what I should do, please reply or email me at allthebeauty@hotmail.com

I have 5 gerbils. i started with 2 . a male and a female (we didn't know at the time) . they were Star and Cookie.star was the female and Cookie is the male. The first litter we had 6 babies. Star was a great mom. the second litter we had on Feb 1, 2003 and we had 5 but later that night 1 of them died.out of the second litter we kept all 4. 2 males and 2 females.from the first litter we kept 2 out of 6 but not long after the 2 we kept became cat food after they chewed a hole in their cage. so that left us with 6 .sadly about 3 months ago Star (the mommy gerbil) died. we don't know why. she turned 2 around may 20th 2003.so now i have 5 gerbils and 4 cats. bad mixture lol.

Hey Dreamer Girl -

You sound like an experienced Gerbil owner. Have you ever had a gerbil act "crazy" and bite at every opportunity? My gerbil will even push his nose out of the cage trying to bite my fingers, and I don't know why. His friend gerbil doesn't act the same way at all. Any ideas?

I dont have a gerbil but i have the same problem with my hamster. i have 1 dwarf hamsterand a common golden hamster. the dwarf bites me when i try to take him out of his cage. so we went and bought tough gloves so when he bites it dosent hurt. My parents thank that he bites due to territory. since he dosent bite outside of the cage. i hope this helps...-kyle

Thanks, Kyle. I have been using a jacket to cover up my hands to get the other Gerbils out, and he can't seem to bite me through that. Perhaps my gerbil is territorial too

gerbils will bite until they get used to you. Try rubbing your hands in the bedding before picking them up.if you smell like them they shouldn't bite as much. sorry it took so long to reply!!
