i have 2 ball pythons. one male & one female. we have had the male for almost 2 years. the female, we just got a few months ago. the male is very large. he is 4" 8 ' long, and very wide. the female is only about 2" 5'. she eats very regularly. themale went through a period of almost a year with no food at all. he has just recently eaten again. my question is, is this ok? is this a normal thing for them to go so long with no food? should i expect this again? will the female be like this, too?? thanks

I found this on a web site http://my.pclink.com/~dkelley/python.html

"Ball pythons can be finicky feeders to say the least. They can go for long periods of time without eating. I think we have one that is anorexic. We took in one adult wild caught female "Pandora" two years ago and she never has eaten by herself. We don't like to let the snakes go for more than nine months without feeding. Sometimes force feeding becomes necessary. It also may stimulate the snake into eating on its own. If you must force-feed your pet, I would suggest you ask someone who has done it before to show you how it is done. It is stressful for the snake. And if it is your first time force-feeding, it can be stressful for you too. Find out more about Information in the Magazines below, or from one of our affiliates."

Hope it helps.

I have a 4 foot female Ball Python and have had many snakes before this one. I have noticed that if you are trying to get your snake to eat NEVER leave a mouse or rat in the cage for more than 5 to 10 minutes because the snake will get used to the mouse or rat being in the tank and start to think that it belongs there, therefor not eating the rat or any others you put in there. My Ball Python has went through stages of not eating also but its because of not having enough time to evolve through the years so your snake will try to hybernate. If your snake is not eating try to turn your heat lamp, or rock or whatever, on less so the snake will think its actually hybernating. After about 2 weeks turn the heat lamp, or rock or whatever, back on and keep it on alot and the snake will most likely go back to eating normally.
