Our bird just had her first eggs and we're very happy about it. She laid one then ignored it but we don't think that that ones got a baby in it but now she has had another one and she is looking after them both in the corner of her cage. So i was just wondering how long the egg takes 2 hatch? Because i can't find it on any websites so do u know?

Hi cockatiels dont usually pay much attention to there eggs until atleast half the clutch has been laid.

If she has laid her eggs on the cage floor these eggs are unlikely to hatch to the fact they cannot be incubated normally as the hen can not turn the eggs correctly and her heat is not regulating properly.

The incubation period is 21days providing the eggs are fertile and incubated properly.

The average clutch size is between 4-6eggs somtimes more or less.

Introducing them to a nest box lined with 2inches of plain wood shavings will get her and the male to use the box to lay her clutch if they will do this you can then place the other eggs into the nest and providing they are fertile will eventually hatch providing nothing goes wrong with the embryo while devoloping.

How old are your birds?
Have the got cuttlefish bone?
Vitamin Block?
Have they been introduced to soft foods such as Boiled eggs, Boiled pasta, Whole wheat bread?

If you would like more help or advice please feel free to email me and i will be glad to help.

Mike.

thank you for your advice. As our birds are both pets we don't even know what sex they are. We don't have a nesting box yet either!
The hen? is about 2 years old and the possible male is about 5 years old. He/She is very brightly coloured although we have not seen them mating. We haven't actually seen the hen? lay the eggs! We do have a cuttle fish and mineral block in the cage but have not given them soft food. Any further advice on deciding what sex they are would be a start! With thanks.

Hi, with cockatiels that have orange cheek patches its easy to tell the sex.

Male has very bright orange cheek patches.
Female has very dull cheek patches.

In cockatiels that dont have the orange patches a DNA sexing can be done by an avian vet and this will determine the sex of the birds. i have added a picture if it will work you will see the dark grey withthe bright yellow head and bright patches and the female is lighter in colour.

Hi, as for sexing a tiel:

Most mutations are easy to tell apart but some, like lutino whitefaces and other that i cant remember are impossible to tell.

If they are grey, the male will have a bright yellow head, the underside of the tail will be black, and the wing feathers will be black.

A female tiel will have barring (stripes) on the underside of her tail, her wings will have spots. Also her face will not have alot of yellow usually limited to the area above the beak, but her face will be grey.

Cheek Patches will NOT help u to sex you bird. One of my lutino females has really bright cheekpatches, way brighter than my grey male.

I will be really glad to help you, as I breed cockatiels. Email me @ lanena322@yahoo.com if you would like more information

I breed cockatiels and FYI A normal grey does not have black wings and the unbderside of the tail will not be black.

Catherine i have added a link to the cockatiels site that will help yu with all your questions as they are qualified breeders.
