Three months ago we got a parakeet who was a rescue. In the last two weeks he's made great strides as far as becoming more tame. We put him in a small spare bedroom in our house, closed the door, and took the top off of his cage. I then was able to get him on my finger and out of the cage. (We've tried leaving his cage door open for hours but he just doesn't like to venture out that way.)

As you can imagine, his first flight was bumpy -- he bumped into the walls and ceiling, but since that time he flies really well. He'll come out of his cage for hours and sit on my shoulder while my wife and I play cards. But the only place he can land is on our Venetian blinds -- he sometimes tries to land on his cage, but as much as we love the little guy, he is a bit clumsy.

I work from home most of the week so he isn't alone very much, but we still worry that maybe he should have a companion for the hours he is alone?

We have a parakeet book that talks about how cruel it is to keep a bird alone because he'll get bored and lonely. We just want what's best for our little friend. Any opinions on one bird or two?

Hi Guys the problem with getting another bird when you have tamed this one so well is that putting another bird in will only turn him back to being untame as he will only really want to spend his time in the cage with his friend.

If you can get another hand tame bird then this should not be a problem you can either get him a female only if you can cope with them laying eggs or another male it does not really matter.

If you would like more help or advice please feel free to email me and i will be pleased to help you out.

Mike.
