Hi my wife is thinking about buying a cockatiel. However, I am allergic to most pets (dogs, cats, hamsters). Does anyone know if birds produce less allergins.

HI, I have never come accross anyone that has been allergic to birds but the best way to find out if you are is by getting close to birds if possible holding a bird is usually enough to kick off an allergy if your allergic, But i dont see there being a problem.

My brother is allergic to most animals but he is ok with my cockatiels and budgies.

I think allergies to animals has something to do with the hair particals but since birds dont have hair no problems should arise, but still check by getting close enought to see if it starts a reaction off..

Good luck and hope birds are not a problem for you as cockatiels are great birds.

People with allergies sometimes have problems with birds. Cockatiels don't have fur but they do produce a dusty residue called powder down. Most people with allergies can keep their reactions to this at a minimum by regularly (2-3x weekly) bathing the animal. Most pet stores carry bird bath in a spray bottle. Birds thoroughly enjoy this so don't worry. This solution usually keeps the owner and the bird happy! Good Luck!
