Can anyone offer any help or solution to this problem. Our cockatiels 1 male and 1 female started breeding in September with three eggs (none hatched), then in October with four eggs (one hatched and lived two days). And now they started breeding with four eggs which are due to hatch in December. Can anyone tell us why they are continuing to breed and more important how to curb it, short of keeping them in separate cages. Most important how do can we help them to produce healthy live cockatiels?

Hi,To Stop them breeding move there toys around the cage.
Move there cage from one side of the room to another or put them into a different room this will un-nerve them and will make them feel less safe so they wont breed.

Take away there nest box adnany toys that can be used as a nest.

If You dont want babies take the eggs away one at a time and boil them let them cool down and mark each one and give them back to the birds and let them sit the rest of the incubation period which is usually around 21 days.

Plenty of cuttlefish and frsh fruit and veg should be available to them as egg laying depleats the calcium the hen has in her body less calcium means weak bones which can lead to brakes.

but the best way to curb the breedin is moving toys around moving the cage and reducing the amout of daylight they have cover there cage with a cloth so it blocks out light but will still let in air...

Hope this is of some help to you if you would like further help please feel free to email me at boro_lad1976@hotmail.com
and i will be happy to help you

Cockatiels are 'oppertunity breeders'. This means that they will breed whenever there is a fresh supply of food and water. And you're obviously taking very good care of your birds to have them breeding once a month.

Taking away anything that can be used as a nest is a very good start, but if they are stubborn enough, they may just lay them on the floor or in the food dish. I've seen this happen. I've even seen eggs in the water bowl. I've also seen them shred anything wooden to make nesting material.

It is good for them to breed, however. Taking away the eggs may be the best course. If she were to lay eggs without him fertilizing them, she may become egg bound which is very painful and can cause death.

Good luck.

Never remove eggs from a bird as they will just lay another to replace the ones removed. If She does lay all you need to do is take them one at a time and boil them cool them down and the write number one on the egg and place it back with the hen and so on until all eggs have been boiled let her sit them for the incubatyion period which is usually around 21 days..

Reduce the amount of light they recieve each day and re-arrange toys in the cage this will unsettle the pair and stops them from breeding..

Breeding cockatiels may be easy but the out come of the clutch doesnt mean that strong healthy chicks will hatch or for that matter the eggs get fertilized.

Egg binding can happen even if the eggs are fertilised, This is why only healthy birds with no genetic problems or birds under the age of 16months should never be bred.

A mating pair doesnt mean you wil get fertilised eggs all the time.

The more a hen lays the lower her calcium levels get so plenty of cuttlefish, vitamin block and fresh fruit and veg should be given to the birds...

You also said that one of the eggs that hatched lived for 2days how did it come to die???

Temprature, light and a nesting box is all key factors in breeding remove the nest box change the temp and lighting hours they recieve and breeding will stop...

My cockatiels only lay eggs when i give them the nest boxes and they only lay 2 clutches a year as birds need a rest after laying eggs.

So please do not remove the eggs just boil and replace otherwise you could end up with a very sick hen from lack of calcium
