My dove has a very soft beak, top and bottom. It is so soft that it seems to be bending even under its own weight. Any help? IP: Logged |

First of all, doves beaks are naturally soft, anyway. It should be about as firm as your own fingernail. If it is significantly softer than that, you can try to give it bird seed with added calcium...I think some types for canaries and finches have added calcium. If that isn't available to you, you can wash some eggshells out (really well) and crumble them into the bottom of it's cage with its grit. I would say that one eggshell should last at least a week. I would also say that you should see at least some improvement within 7-10 days. IP: Logged |

sounds like a calcium deficiency yes doves do generally have a softer beak than other birds but being softer than usual is a bit of a concern my advice would be to seek advice from a vet that way you can get the all clear and they might recommend a certain type of calcium treatment as to much or too little can actually do more harm than good keep us posted on this situation mike...
