I'm thinking about getting a parakeet! I was just wondering if anyone had advice for this begining bird owner. Should I get one or two? Do you guys prefer males or females?
If you have any advice you can either post here or email me at:

Thanks!

Hi Erica!
Parakeets can be very sweet birds and very intertaining. I would suggest that you get only one because if you get two, they will become attached to eachother instead of you.(that also goes for getting a mirror) The males are the ones that talk, although I have heard of someone that had a female (she thought) and it talked too.
Thing is, you can't tell if they are male or female until they get older. The lines on their forehead recede as they get older. The only thing to go by would be the color of the cere. It will turn blue if it's a boy and stay tan or turn pinkish if it is a girl. It takes several months before you can be certain.(if you get a baby) As a matter of fact, I have a budgie named "Buddy" that just laid 4 eggs yesterday.......LOL.
My favorite bird, Mickey, a Cockatiel, was a year old when I bought him at a pet store, so don't shy away from the older ones.
It might do you good to get a book from a pet store or even go to the library and read up on budgies before you make up your mind. They are precious little creatures and need attention just like any other pets.
I hope this helped you a little and good luck! Let us know what you do, ok?
Betty

Budgies could be so cute. I had a budgie his name was pepsi. He died at only 2 for no reaseon. The not good thing about budgies is that they are an pradictibile they might be cheerpy and active and happy one day the next day they die (that happend to me) know I have a cockatiel named ricky.

I decided I'm not going to get one at just this time it would be too much money and arrangements. I'm going to be in college in 2/3 years and I dont really have a constant job to care for the bird. Im going to wait till I am a bit older and I am sure I can care for it. Thanks for the advice I will come to this site in that future that I do get a parakeet and I have questions.
