Hi Guys!!! Hope you can help. I have just added a new addition to my horsey family. A TB he is 15.3hh. and he is overweight. He is approx around a 7 on the henneke scale, I dont know what his weight is. Any suggestions on diet and excercie that I could put him on to get him into shape? I dont want to over feed him or under feed him. I want to get him to shape the healthy way? Your help would be appreciated! Thanks.

If I were you, I'd cut his grain a whole lot. Still give him plenty of access to grass and hay, but until he starts to drop weight, he doesn't need a whole lot of grain. Find out how much he weighs. That's important. I have a 15.3 TB gelding who weighs in at about 1050 lbs, and he looks to be around a perfect weight, Feed him a lower-fat grain, like Equine Adult. But keep the servings small. Also, start him on a conditioning workout. If possible, ride through hilly terrain and work especially at the trot to drop the fat and build the muscle. Start out trotting for 10 minutes, then walking for 10 minutes, and work him until he can trot for 10 minutes, and by the time you've walked him out for 3, his breathing is back to normal. Then expand your trot sessions. Ride a few days a week like that, I've noticed it to help a whole lot.

exersize, not extensive but gradual work him up to optimal weight. Decrease grain slowly, but not hay. Limit grass turnout as well. Grass can put on many added lbs...hince "grass belly".
