Hi. I work at some stables cleaning and tacking for lessons and fell in love with a chestnut mare 2 summers ago. When we got her, she was extrememly timid, as she was abused by her previous owner. She was so skinny and wouldnt come near anyone. I worked with her for a few weeks and she's doing fine now. She still spooks more than a normal horse, but she's a sweetheart.

She's kept in a really small pen at the side of the barn and I never see her out running around. I told my boss about this and she let me take the horse out on a lunge line. She had no idea what to do. I've learned that she is kept alone in her pen because she doesnt like other horses, male or female, and bites and fights with them.

I really want to see her running around in the big paddock with the other horses. Is there any way I can get her to be nicer to other horses? She's great with people and even dogs, but hates other horses. Please help me. Thanks so much.

Sounds to me like she needs formal socilization. Putting horses in a pen next to her with supervision, and not IN WITH HER, can start the process...observe for a while. If they are fighting over the fence but not harming each other, leave them alone...she will get used to him/her eventually. Take it slow with her. She's obviously had a rough time.
