I'm going to be pulling my horses shoes for the winter in the next couple weeks (unless he decides to throw them sooner) but until I do, does anybody have any advice as to what can keep the iceballs from packing during rides? I've always been told cooking spray works, and maybe it helps, but I haven't noticed it really "doing anything" if you know what I mean. My horse is still moving around on heels. I don't want to pull him from training til I get the shoes off (especially with the show coming up this weekend), but I'm worried about him doing forced stressed work with those iceballs packing in. Even though, knowing him, he'll probably do the most damage running around the field, not while he's under saddle :P IP: Logged |

if you decide to leave shoes on you can get the rubber pads. They keep dirt and ice and gunk from packing. Mostly they are used for horses who have navicular and foundered, who need the extra padding and protection. You can also try by applying Rain Maker on the soles of his feet before rides as well, its sticky yet oily and the snow and ice shouldn't stick at all. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Samsintentions I'll give the Rain Maker a go til next week, my farrier finally got back to me, and is coming out next week. I'm gonna go with the pulled shoes right now, since his work load won't be quite as stressful through the winter. He's been barefoot before, and he was fine (w/t/c/jumping, plodding down the road through the neighborhood..) so I'm hoping he'll stay sound. But if for any reason he needs the shoes back, I'll remember the pads. Thanks IP: Logged |
