I had a horse i was having a hard time keeping wieght on also, ...first things i did were...1. had vet check his teeth 2. i wormed him..3. then i slowly switched his diet...too...1 flk grass hay, 1 flake alfalfa and ...1/4 can soaked beet pulp 1/2 can stategy...1 tablespoon granulated mineral salt, 2 cups bran..mix and i gave it 1 time a day and she got hay 2 x a day. in the cold weather i increased her grass hay. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I see that you are from the UK, so I don't know what comparable feeds would be...but I'll atleast tell you what my hard-keeper is on! He is a 13 y/o TB geling..hard keeper and I am finally just getting him at a good weight (I have only owned him since January '03) Now that winter is approaching I obvioulsy need to make sure he is maintaining and even better, still gaining a bit! He is fed twice daily and he gets: He gets free choice (round bale) hay all day and three flakes for when he comes in at night. I have found he is gaining nicely and his energy isn't too high! Hope I helped somewhat! IP: Logged |
