My Thoroughbred consistantly gets girth galls on both sides. I've tried everything I can think of, from switching to a double elastic girth, to using a girth cover. His legs are stretched before every ride, but he keeps getting the rubs. Given a couple days off, they go down, but once back in work, they come back. Does anybody have any other ideas? They don't seem to bother him too much, but they look nasty, and they can't be comfortable, no matter how little he's showing being uncomfortable.

try bathing the girth galls and surrounding skin in salt water to harden the skin or rub manuka honey in to them as it heals almost anything and keeps out infections.

well my question i guess is..how long has this horse been ridden undersaddle and how much does he get ridden...he should eventually toughen up/callus up..but i say should cuz they dont all do that but most do...you might try cleaning with warm water after you ride and use a little desitin..treat it like you would diaper rash..worked for me...desitin will help protect during riding also...and help keep the sweat and salt off until it heals.Desitin also works great if you get a new baby(colt) that gets the scours..works better than vasiline bcus it doesnt wear off as easily!

Hey guys, thanks for the ideas, but despite it all, my horse was determined to rub. He's a 6 year old OTT, so I know he's had a chance to get used to the girths, I just don't know what it was about my girths that he had problems with. I finally grew wise and decided maybe he had some sort of leather allergy. I still can't say if that's it, but I switched him to a Professionals Choice girth...ya know, one of those neoprene-type ones? And we haven't had a problem since. I can leave the saddle on all day, loosen/tighten the girth, pull the saddle between classes....we're not having any problems now. (knock on wood)
So basically, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for those suggestions you guys gave me, but here's something else to try in the future :P
