It's the start of another trail/show season around my area and I'm so bummed because I'm not allowed to ride this year . Has anyone got any funny trail or show stories? I'd love to hear them.
I think my favorite experience was my first major trail ride (40 miles round trip), which had to be the trip from heck, and my stepdad had gotten on his first horse for the first time ever, never rode before in his life. We'd had Goldie for maybe a week and she's just the sweetest prettiest little Fox Trotter I've ever seen (we had to get a gaited for the poor old guy's bones . Anyway, I was riding a Morgan I was training with a group of my friends until everybody stopped for lunch (there were about 200 people on this ride) at the halfway point. My stepdad got down and could barely walk at this point. One of my friends was leaving at halfway and offered to give him and Goldie a ride back to the start point, but he decided to stick it out (we were so proud!). We tied our horses in a safe place, went in to eat, come out, no horses. Somebody had untied them and put them at a hitching post without telling us. After a half hour of panicked searching, we found the darlings all safe and sound, no harm done. Little bit upset understandably since horses ain't cheap, but okay. Anyway, we start back on the ride, the mare I was on loses a shoe. Put an Easyboot on, still have about seventeen miles to go, but she's a trooper and there wasn't too much else we could do. Stopped to water the horses at a canal, all five of my group goes in, my mare throws a fit and goes in last never has been in water before. We got pushed out next to my stepdad and Goldie, didn't know there was a drop off, and he accidentally bumped me and Lady over the edge. Really, we wanted to swim and get the $700 saddle wet! After our refreshing little dip, we made it safely out because she does have a good head, we stayed with my parents and the lady who owns the barn we board at who was riding another Trotter. We went through a drive thru (they do serve you on horses!), and the lady from the barn and I switched horses because my wrist locked up and Lady doesn't neck rein while her horse did. The lady's over seventy and had to ride a regular trotting horse, I felt so bad! My mom didn't check her girth when we'd stopped halfway and after the canal, she kept slipping off (it was funny since she didn't get hurt). We finally got back (everyone was still alive), and my poor stepdad went to get off Goldie and couldn't straighten his legs out! He walked like that for three days straight! We felt so bad for him, but we were proud that he made it the whole way! The next day we did a seven mile trail, Mom kept falling off (darn girth! yes, her horse blows out) and my stepdad actually came with us! We took care of Goldie for him that night, but considering I was the one to get my family into horses, I couldn't have been prouder of him for getting through all that without more trouble than the canal incident (you should've seen us drilling him on trail etiquette the week before!). LOL!
Well, that's my tale, hope you guys have lots!
