You can't get on a horse until about the age of 2, when the back has solidified to support the weight, otherwise you risk injury to the horse. Also, those front legs, esp the knees, have to mature as well. In the meantime, find a club or write to those organizations, get books, find people in it, and they can help you. Best wishes.

I agree that you need to evaluate your horses ability to carry your wieght before you mount but jumping in its self is very stressful on a horses knees, so even when you are ready to mount and start riding your baby you should check with your vet about when this young horse will be ready to take over jumps. you can cause perminate damage if you improperly train a young horse. But you sound excited to start so here's a couple of sugestions. You need this baby to lounge well both directions using voice commands. If you already are at this point then you can move forward, if not than you have a couple months work ahead. Once the baby lounges well, you can place a pole on the ground and lounge over it, After your baby is handling one pole well then add another work up to 3 poles. This will get your baby paying attention to where it's feet are. Once the baby can walk over ground level poles then move to the trot, proguess in the same way 1 pole then add. After the baby is doing well with the trot then move to the canter with the same progression always starting with one pole. When your vet thinks your baby is sound enough to jump 12 in. with out a rider, some time around 2 or 2 1/2 years old. you can elevate one pole and aways just one. start at the walk, move to the trot and then to the canter. By the time your baby is ready to carry you over fences she will be well educated to the jumps and will only have to ajust to your weight, fear and refushal should not be a problem.Good luck.
Here are the avarage stride lengths you should work with.
walkover:twelve to fifteen inches apart
trotover:twenty-four to thirty inches apart
canterover:six feet apart
remember to ajust acording to your horses stride.
