My 22 yr old mare almost refuses to go outside to urinate. She will urinate right in her stall most of the time and frankly we're at a loss for a cure if there is any. All the other horses have dry stalls buther's is a muddy swamp. HELP!!! IP: Logged |

My vet said that she's just and old horse. I will probably get a second opinion. Money is always an issue but not so much when it comes to the horse. IP: Logged |

alright hun i asked my vet about it and he said she could have something wrong with her kidneys or she has a bladder infection and if she is an older horse that could possibley be the reason but my vet doubts it IP: Logged |

If it's a muddy swamp, you need more bedding to absorb it as well as have a vet check out this horse, and let her out more. First off, sounds like a lack of bedding material and letting her out. I liked cedar shavings or pine shavings, about 4 bags-5 bags. Put lime over the wet areas. Cover with shavings. Let horse out all day, and bring in at night, or others that showed did it the opposite so the coat wouldn't bleach out. But all in all, a muddy mess it shouldn't be. Bad for feet....and general conditions. Best wishes. IP: Logged |

ammonia from the urine actually is attracted to water so check around your stable to see if there is a possibility of it. a horse wont go near or drink water with a strong ammonia smell. it could just be a habit as some horses feel better doing there business in one spot IP: Logged |

I have a 6 year old gelding that no mater how long he has been in the pasture he will urinate the min. I bring him to his stall, he will Urinate when I enter the barn to feed. This is his routine, and nothing is wrong with him, so I would say unless this is a changed behavior in your mare I think it is just habit but if it is new you should certainly have her seen by a vet. To show how the habits of horses can easily be passed to others in your barn, his 4 year old sister started urinated when I enter to feed after I started stalling her close to him. I have been involved with horses for 37 years and worked as a vet tech. along side a equine specialist. But again having the mare check out by a Vet could answer the question. IP: Logged |
